Five people hospitalized after a shooting near Florida A&M University have been discharged, Tallahassee police said Sunday morning, October 25. Six others remain in the hospital, with one in critical condition, following the gunfire that broke out near the university's football stadium on Saturday night.
Authorities reported that 12 people were injured in the incident, including six children. Eleven of the victims suffered gunshot wounds. The hospital update came hours after the shooting near Bragg Memorial Stadium, where the surrounding area was the scene of a police investigation during the university's homecoming weekend.
Police placed the shooting near the intersection of Perry and Manatee streets, close to the stadium, shortly before 8 p.m. Saturday. The gunfire occurred as students and alumni were gathering in Tallahassee for Florida A&M's annual homecoming celebrations.
At a news conference Saturday night, Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence E. Revell said the injured included six adults and six juveniles. The youngest victim was 11 years old. The figures outlined by authorities put children at half of the 12 people hurt in the incident.
Investigators said their preliminary information indicated that a physical confrontation involving two or three people preceded the gunfire. That account remains part of the ongoing inquiry. Police said Sunday that they were continuing to investigate and would release further updates as more information became available.
The Tallahassee Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit is handling the investigation, with detectives working to identify those responsible for the shooting. As of the department's latest update, authorities had announced no arrests. The information about a confrontation before the shooting was described by investigators as preliminary.
Florida Lt. Gov. Jay Collins responded to the shooting in a social media message asking for prayers for the victims and the community. In his post on X, Collins expressed sympathy for those injured and their families, specifically noting that children were among the victims.
"My heart goes out to the victims and families impacted by the shooting near FAMU," Collins wrote. He added: "Knowing children were among those injured makes this even more heartbreaking." His response came as authorities continued their investigation into the Saturday night violence.
