Airbnb plans to introduce an artificial intelligence travel agent in the first half of 2027, aiming to help users plan and book trips through its platform. The company outlined the timetable and its approach in its third-quarter 2026 shareholder letter, released on November 6. The planned launch would bring together trip exploration, group decision-making and booking within Airbnb.
The company is developing a trip-planning experience built around AI, with an interface that changes according to what a user asks. Instead of presenting the process primarily through a chat window, Airbnb says the agent will assemble relevant visual and planning tools as people explore their travel options.
Those tools will come from a collection of hundreds of interface elements designed for travel. Airbnb listed maps, photographs, comparisons, calendars and itineraries among the components available to the agent. It says the system will combine those elements in real time, tailoring their presentation to the question a guest is trying to answer.
Airbnb described the agent as a way for guests to explore possibilities, reach decisions with their travel companions and then take action within the service. The proposed interface is intended to support those connected parts of planning a trip. Its design reflects the company's view that a conventional chatbot is not the right format for that process.
In explaining its approach, Airbnb distinguished travel planning from the simpler activities that AI agents can already perform. It pointed to restaurant reservations and appointment scheduling as examples of routine tasks, arguing that arranging an Airbnb trip presents a different challenge. The company said its experience connecting hosts with guests, its existing involvement in reservations and an interface created specifically for travel give it an advantage.
Co-founder and chief executive Brian Chesky had previously disclosed plans to introduce an agent in 2027. Speaking at the Skift Global Forum, he described an interface that would be richer than a chatbot. The shareholder letter now places the expected rollout in the first six months of that year and describes how the interface would work.
The letter also presented AI as a significant development for Airbnb beyond the planned guest-facing agent. The company said the technology has changed both its product development and the way it operates, expressing strong enthusiasm about its impact on the business.
