Bayern Munich moved into the next round of the German Cup with a 6-1 victory over second-tier Magdeburg on Wednesday, in a match that also served as a celebration of Harry Kane's Ballon d'Or triumph. The striker was kept on the bench for the whole game.
Kane won football's top individual award on Monday, becoming the first English player to do so since Michael Owen in 2001. He is also the first Bayern player to claim it in 45 years and the first at a German club since 1996. The club chose to rest him two days later as it manages his workload ahead of a demanding run of domestic and European fixtures.
The England captain, who is 33, received a guard of honour before kickoff and waved to the supportive crowd at the Allianz Arena as he walked out. Home fans are set to honour him again before Saturday's Bundesliga meeting with Borussia Dortmund, a game between two sides level on points at the top of the table.
Michael Olise scored twice for Bayern, with his goals coming either side of one from Magdeburg's Ismael Saibari. The hosts were briefly made to work in the first half, when the visitors equalised and also struck the post on the stroke of half-time.
After the break, Magdeburg could not keep pace with Bayern's tempo. Alphonso Davies and Nathaniel Brown scored within three minutes of each other to ease the hosts clear, and teenager David Santos Daiber added the sixth in stoppage time.
Assistant coach Aaron Danks was on the bench for a second successive match after head coach Vincent Kompany collapsed during a training session last week. Danks was also in charge for Sunday's 3-1 win at Freiburg.
Board member for sport Max Eberl said on Wednesday that Kompany has been discharged from hospital. The Belgian was rushed in on Friday after collapsing during a second team training session, having been nursing a virus and missing some training in the days before. "Given the circumstances, he's doing well," Eberl told broadcaster ARD before the Magdeburg match. "He was discharged from the hospital today. That is the biggest and best news for all of us."
Eberl said a meningeal irritation caused the incident. "He will now rest and take medication, and I am certain that he will very soon be back on the touchline, operating at 100 percent," he said. No return date has been set, and Kompany will resume his duties only after receiving medical clearance.
Bayern lead the Bundesliga title race. After Saturday's Klassiker against Dortmund, they travel to Spain next week to face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.
