Brightline passenger service between Orlando and West Palm Beach has resumed following a suspension caused by extreme flooding in Brevard County. The high-speed rail company announced the restoration on Thursday, Nov. 5, after floodwaters affecting the route receded and work needed to reopen the tracks was completed.
The company had temporarily halted service on that stretch Monday as flooding affected the rail route. The interruption came during a week of heavy rainfall across several Florida counties, with major flooding reported in some areas. Brevard County communities were among those dealing with substantial damage and disruptions.
Brightline said its teams coordinated with Florida East Coast Railway and Brevard County Emergency Management to bring service back. According to the company's news release, normal rail operations resumed after water levels dropped, necessary repairs were finished and Florida East Coast Railway cleared the tracks, signals and crossings through inspections.
The suspension affected the connection between Orlando and West Palm Beach, while Brightline's service farther south continued operating. Trains between West Palm Beach and Miami were not disrupted by the shutdown. That portion of the network includes stops in Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale and Aventura, which remained part of the operating service.
With the Orlando connection restored, officials advised passengers to consult Brightline's app and website for further service updates. The company also said it was contacting customers affected by the suspension directly to discuss their travel options. Those communications concern passengers whose journeys were disrupted during the temporary closure.
The rainfall behind the rail interruption brought widespread consequences beyond train service. Officials said some communities in Brevard County received as much as two feet of rain during the heavy weather earlier in the week. Experts described the flooding as a 100-year event, reflecting the severity of conditions experienced in the county.
Flooding caused major damage to roads, homes and businesses. It also forced the suspension of some services and the closure of some schools. Brightline's announcement confirmed that its affected passenger route had reopened following repairs and inspections, after the rail suspension became one of the service disruptions associated with the flooding.
