The Blue Springs High School marching band is asking for the community's help after an all-terrain vehicle used to haul its gear was stolen in September.

According to the band's Director of Bands, the ATV had been locked up outside, next to the band garage, when it was taken. The band reported the theft to police, and the investigation is still open. However, there is little hope that the vehicle will be recovered.

Until a replacement is found, the band, known as the Golden Regiment, has been borrowing an ATV from a community member. With an appearance in the Tournament of Roses Parade approaching, supporters have started raising money to buy a new one. Efforts include a GoFundMe campaign and a fundraiser night at a local Culver's restaurant.

Many people may wonder why a marching band needs an ATV at all. Director of Bands Dr. Tim Allshouse said the answer is student safety. The band has about 2.5 tons of equipment to move, whether it is at the school or at a football game, including speakers and marimbas.

"It's not a luxury," Allshouse said. "It's definitely, it's a safety, a concern for the kids, and we have no way to really make this work."

The Culver's fundraiser takes place Thursday, Oct. 29, at the Blue Springs restaurant on South 7 Highway. Fundraising runs all day from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM. During the peak window, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, the restaurant will donate 15% of sales to the band.

Donors can also earn rewards. A $3 donation comes with a coupon for a scoop of fresh frozen custard, a $5 donation brings a Concrete Mixer coupon, and a $10 donation earns a Value Basket coupon.

The goal for the Thursday event is to raise $2,500.
