Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for its new adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, giving viewers a first full look at a limited series built on Jane Austen's beloved novel. Emma Corrin and Jack Lowden headline the production as Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy.
The trailer, released Wednesday, reintroduces the famous romance with a glimpse of Corrin's Elizabeth, known as Lizzie, in conversation with her sister Jane, played by Freya Mavor. "One day Jane, I shall be either a governance and a spinster or a wife and a mother," Lizzie says. "And then finally we may talk about something else."
Olivia Colman appears as Mrs. Bennett, the mother of the sisters. Rufus Sewell takes on the role of Mr. Bennett. The younger Bennett daughters are played by Hopey Parish as Mary, Hollie Avery as Kitty and Rhea Norwood as Lydia.
The series runs for six episodes. Dolly Alderton wrote it and serves as an executive producer, while Euros Lyn, known for directing Heartstopper, is at the helm as director.
Alderton has said she was initially hesitant when approached about the project. In comments to Netflix's Tudum, she recalled her first reaction to the email asking whether she would adapt the book. "I absolutely cannot do this. This is everyone's favorite book. It's too much responsibility," she said. She added that she considered everything that might go wrong and then set those worries aside. Since then, she said, she has focused on "the honor and the privilege of being entrusted with this story."
Her version has been described as faithful to Austen's original text. Alderton said the story endures because of its emotional core. In her words, the feelings in the book are "as pertinent now as they were in 1812."
The adaptation follows another recent Austen project. Sense and Sensibility was reimagined as a feature film and released earlier this month.
Behind the scenes, Laura Lankester, Will Johnston and Louise Mutter are executive producing for Lookout Point, joined by Alderton, Lyn and Corrin. Lisa Osborne is the producer.
Pride and Prejudice is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on Dec. 3.
