Jacob Morley, a 28-year-old inmate who escaped from a Tennessee prison more than a week ago, has been recaptured. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation announced on Tuesday that the fugitive is back in custody following his arrest near Kansas City, Missouri. Officials credited the public and partner agencies for their role in concluding the search.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Morley was arrested around 11:30 a.m. local time near Norbone, a small city approximately an hour's drive from Kansas City. The arrest was a joint effort involving multiple partner agencies. Missouri authorities acted on intelligence from Tennessee officials, who indicated that Morley might be traveling through the state based on footage from Flock cameras.
Morley had been serving a life sentence at the Northwest Correctional Complex, a facility located in an isolated area of Tiptonville in northwestern Tennessee. He was convicted four years ago of killing a coworker. Correctional officers discovered he was missing from the prison at approximately 11:30 p.m. on October 25.
Security footage reviewed by investigators showed Morley slipping through a fence on the prison property while still wearing his uniform. Two days later, additional video emerged showing the inmate stealing a white 2008 Ford F-350 truck in the early hours of October 27. The vehicle, which bore Tennessee plates and a logo for Lindamood Planting Company, was taken from Lake County.
The stolen truck was later found in Marion, Illinois, about 150 miles north of Tiptonville, on the same day it was stolen. At that time, Morley's specific location remained unknown to authorities. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation placed Morley on its most wanted list, with the governor's office and U.S. Marshals joining in offering combined rewards of up to $17,500 for information leading to his capture.
Morley was originally sentenced to life in prison for the 2022 murder of Cody Birchfield, his former coworker. Birchfield's body was discovered in a box under Morley's home in Carter County, Tennessee, after being missing for several weeks. Morley was also convicted of aggravated burglary, tampering with evidence, vandalism, and evading arrest during his initial flight from deputies in 2022, which ended in North Carolina.
The Northwest Correctional Complex is a men's prison with a capacity of 1,776 inmates, ranging from minimum to maximum security levels. It also houses minors convicted as adults. The facility has faced scrutiny in recent years due to multiple violent incidents, including attacks between inmates and staff.
In July, a grand jury issued dozens of indictments related to the murders of five inmates and assaults on staff at the prison. During a recent meeting, members of the Tennessee Inmate Disciplinary Oversight Board discussed ongoing issues at the facility, suggesting that leadership problems may have contributed to the recurring incidents.
Investigators have indicated that they will release more details about the specific mechanics of the escape as they become available. For now, the primary fact established is that Morley breached the prison fence to gain his freedom.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation issued a statement thanking the public for their vigilance and tips. They also expressed gratitude to law enforcement partners for their continued efforts to bring the search to a successful conclusion.
