Aston Villa face Barcelona at Spotify Camp Nou on November 2, with their unbeaten start to the Champions League league phase facing a major test. The matchday four fixture kicks off at 20:00 GMT in Barcelona, where the visitors will seek to build on three victories and 12 goals in the competition.
Villa sit second in the standings, behind Paris Saint-Germain only on goals scored. Unai Emery’s team opened with a 3-2 victory at Club Brugge, overwhelmed Fenerbahce 6-0 at home and then defeated Viking 3-1 at Villa Park. Barcelona are eighth after a 4-2 loss to PSG ended a European campaign that had begun with convincing wins against Feyenoord and Galatasaray.
Barcelona have also experienced a recent setback domestically. Their defeat in Paris was followed four days later by a 2-1 home loss to Real Madrid, ending a run of nine consecutive La Liga victories. They responded by beating Alaves 6-1 on Saturday, reclaiming first place after Atletico Madrid had briefly moved ahead. Lamine Yamal contributed a goal and an assist, taking his totals across all competitions this season to 12 goals and 11 assists.
Villa’s domestic results have been less consistent than their European performances. After collecting one point from their first four Premier League matches, they have taken 11 from an unbeaten five-game run to reach ninth place. Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Fulham included an own goal by goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. Villa also suffered a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth in the League Cup’s last 16 last week.
The visit to Barcelona marks another significant fixture in Villa’s progress under Emery, who took charge in October 2022. He led the club into the Conference League and subsequently the Champions League, where they reached the quarterfinals in 2024-25 before losing narrowly to eventual champions PSG. Last season, Villa won the Europa League by defeating Freiburg 3-0 in Istanbul in May, while another top-four Premier League finish secured their return to the Champions League.
Barcelona enter as favourites, but defensive difficulties could offer Villa an opening. Hansi Flick’s side have conceded in 18 consecutive Champions League matches, the longest such sequence among teams in this season’s competition. Injuries to Eric Garcia, Jules Kounde and Xavi Espart have disrupted the defence, while Andreas Christensen will not be risked despite returning to training following a thigh injury. Villa have no new injury concerns, although Amadou Onana, Matteo Ruggeri and Aaron Wan-Bissaka remain unavailable.
Flick described Emery as one of Europe’s best coaches and said Villa would present a difficult challenge. He also stressed his confidence in Barcelona and their objective of finishing in the league phase’s top eight. Barcelona winger Anthony Gordon similarly highlighted Villa’s quality, praising their manager and players.
The clubs last met in the European Super Cup final in January 1983, when Villa won 3-1 on aggregate despite losing the opening leg at Camp Nou. Emery’s own record against Barcelona is less favourable: three victories in 30 meetings across his managerial career.
