The Philadelphia Flyers have officially broken with decades of tradition by introducing a primarily gray jersey for the current season. The new uniform, designated as Liberty Gray, marks the first time in team history that a jersey is not predominantly orange, white, or black. The club will debut the distinctive design on Tuesday during its 7 p.m. matchup against the Minnesota Wild on NBCSP.
This release is part of the Hometown Remix series, a collaborative initiative between the NHL and Fanatics. Similar to the City Edition uniforms in the NBA and City Connect designs in Major League Baseball, these alternate jerseys aim to authentically celebrate the local culture, fans, and history of each respective city.
Flyers governor Dan Hilferty stated that the design process focused on embodying the pride and passion of Philadelphia. He noted that the team seized the opportunity to honor the city's significant role in American history while celebrating the generations of fans who have shaped the franchise. Hilferty described the uniforms as a tribute to both the city and the country, bridging the past with a forward-looking perspective.
The jersey incorporates several visual references to the Liberty Bell. A crack similar to the famous bell is integrated into the player numbers on the back. Additionally, the inscription Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land unto All the Inhabitants Thereof appears on the sleeves in a black tone-on-tone UV stamp. This text is positioned between several Burnt Orange stripes. The accompanying matte black helmets feature a Liberty Bell decal on the back and cracked number decals on both the front and back.
Forward Trevor Zegras expressed his approval of the new look, specifically highlighting the Liberty Bell crack in the numbers as a cool Philadelphia touch. He added that wearing a new jersey is always a fun experience for the players.
The traditional Burnt Orange color remains a key element, used in the sleeve striping to represent the Flyers' 60th anniversary and at the bottom of the jersey. Further historical nods include a reference to the 250th anniversary of the United States on the inside of the hem and a Constitution wordmark inside the collar. The nameplates have also been updated from the standard Serif font to a Sans-serif style.
Forward Owen Tippett praised the overall aesthetic, describing the all-dark uniform as clean and mean. He considered it one of the better-looking designs, noting its simplicity and how it sticks to the point.
The crest on the new jersey is raised to mimic the casting of the Liberty Bell, a detail that connects to the team's foundational history. The traditional white accents have been replaced with an off-white shade called Declaration Parchment.
The Flyers are scheduled to wear this jersey 13 times this season. In addition to the Tuesday debut, home games will be designated as part of an Independence Edition experience. Specific home dates include November 27 against Vancouver, December 3 against the New York Islanders, December 14 against Florida, December 18 against Detroit, January 10 against Chicago, January 23 against New Jersey, February 20 against the New York Rangers, March 7 against St. Louis, and March 18 against Boston. The team will also wear the jersey on the road on November 30 in Toronto, as well as on February 26 and March 20 on Long Island.
Coach Rick Tocchet believes that visual elements help create synergy and brotherhood within the team. While the coaching staff will not wear special suits, Tocchet indicated he might wear one of his old suits for his own version of retro. Details regarding the Independence Edition game-day experience will be released on Tuesday. The new jerseys are available for purchase at the team's online store and at Xfinity Mobile Arena on Tuesday.
