Southeast Michigan residents experienced a sharp shift in weather conditions this week, moving from near-record warmth to a significant November chill. On Tuesday, temperatures at Metro Airport reached 75 degrees, just one degree below the record for that date. By Friday afternoon, however, the atmosphere had changed dramatically, with temperatures struggling to rise above the mid-40s despite an official high of 50 degrees recorded earlier in the day.
The recent cool snap was driven by cloud cover, chilly northwest breezes, and occasional showers that created a damp and chilly environment. While the Metro Detroit area received rain, communities farther north in Michigan experienced their first measurable snowfall of the season. The Upper Peninsula saw the heaviest accumulation, with 3.5 inches reported southeast of Mount Arvon in Baraga County. Other locations, including Champion and Herman in Baraga County, recorded two inches of snow, while the National Weather Service office near Negaunee logged 1.5 inches.
Northern Lower Michigan also saw a mix of rain and snow showers, though accumulation remained light. For the Metro Detroit region, this system did not bring snow, but it did bring colder air temperatures. Heading into the weekend, residents can expect a chilly start on Saturday, with morning temperatures in the 30s. Some inland communities may approach the freezing mark, requiring heavier coats and hats for early morning activities.
The cold conditions will be particularly noticeable for fans attending the college football rivalry game in Ann Arbor. Michigan State will travel to Michigan Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff against the Wolverines. The forecast predicts partly cloudy skies, with temperatures falling into the lower 40s during the evening game. Attendees are advised to dress in layers, including a winter coat, warm socks, and gloves, as the steady drop in temperature will make the night feel quite brisk.
By Saturday afternoon, conditions will improve slightly, with highs reaching the lower 50s. Clouds are expected to break, allowing for some sunshine, although northwest winds of 10 to 15 mph with gusts near 20 mph will maintain a chilly feel. Sunday offers a more pleasant outlook for outdoor activities and sports fans. Temperatures in Metro Detroit are forecast to climb into the upper 50s and 60s, accompanied by mostly sunny skies.
The Detroit Pistons will host the Los Angeles Lakers at Little Caesars Arena on Sunday evening. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. While a hoodie or light jacket should suffice for the trip to the arena, fans should bring an extra layer for the return trip, as temperatures will drop into the upper 40s after the game. Southwest winds may gust between 25 and 30 mph on Sunday, potentially making it feel cooler than the actual temperature.
The warm trend is expected to continue into the beginning of next week. Monday should feature sunshine and highs in the upper 50s, while Tuesday could see temperatures reach the lower 60s. This would be several degrees above the typical average for early November. The mostly dry weather pattern provides a welcome break after the unsettled conditions of the previous few days.
Wednesday, which is Veterans Day, is also forecast to be favorable for outdoor ceremonies. Afternoon temperatures are expected to reach the mid-50s under partly sunny skies. However, those attending morning events should keep a jacket handy, as temperatures will start considerably cooler. A new weather pattern is set to bring another cooldown during the second half of next week, with highs falling into the upper 40s by Thursday and Friday.
