Jay Park, a resident of Allen, has launched a new digital platform designed to combat rising food costs. The site, CheapFoodMap.com, serves as a free, crowdsourced directory of affordable dishes available at independent restaurants across the United States. Park developed the project after being laid off from a major technology company where he had worked for 18 years. During his tenure, he led the organization's AI task force, a role that was impacted by the very technology he now uses to build his new venture.

The inspiration for the map came from Park's personal frustration with the increasing norm of $15 salads and $20 burgers. He began searching for places where a satisfying meal could still be purchased for less than $10. His investigation revealed that such options exist but are often hidden from public view. Park noted that these affordable meals are typically found at small, locally owned establishments that offer excellent lunch specials but lack the advertising budgets of national chains.

The platform allows users to search for inexpensive meals in their vicinity, view specific menu items and their associated prices, and check restaurant ratings. Unlike traditional directories that list average prices, CheapFoodMap tracks individual dishes and dates the reported costs to ensure accuracy. Users can contribute by submitting restaurants, uploading photos, voting on listings, and verifying prices. To qualify for inclusion, a meal must cost $10 or less, and large national chains are excluded from the map.

Park draws a parallel to Beggarmap, a similar crowdsourced project in South Korea, seeing an opportunity to replicate its success in the United States. He believes the model creates a win-win scenario where diners save money and local businesses gain new customers, thereby supporting the local economy. The site currently features more than 2,000 listings nationwide, with a significant concentration in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

In the DFW region, the map highlights several affordable options that might otherwise go unnoticed. In Uptown Dallas, Crushcraft Thai offers Pad Thai and Drunken Noodles for under $10. Carrollton is noted for its variety of Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese, and Hawaiian restaurants, while family-owned spots in Plano, McKinney, and Arlington also feature prominently. Park advises diners to look beyond standard dinner menus, suggesting that lunch specials, happy hours, and weekly promotions often provide the best value.

Specific culinary categories, such as taquerias with Taco Tuesday deals, banh mi shops, and noodle restaurants, are identified as reliable sources for low-cost meals. One of Park's favorite discoveries is Edmond's Burger in Plano, which offers a burger, fries, and a drink for $9.99. During a visit, Park observed a strong community connection, noting that the owner knew the names of the majority of regular customers. The restaurant has also been nominated for Yelp's Top 100 Places to Eat, illustrating the quality available at lower price points.

Park now handles all aspects of the platform, from development and maintenance to social media content and restaurant visits. He uses AI tools to manage the project as a one-person operation, a shift from the larger team structures he was accustomed to in his previous career. The experience has changed his perspective on entrepreneurship, reinforcing that useful products can be built by identifying a problem and working through the details without substantial initial funding.

The future of CheapFoodMap relies on community engagement. Park hopes that more diners will contribute their own findings rather than keeping their favorite inexpensive spots secret. He aims to expand the resource from its DFW roots to a national level, ensuring that affordable local food remains accessible to all.

For Park, the mission is straightforward: to fight food inflation one meal at a time. He encourages those who believe good food under $10 is a thing of the past to look in different places. With hundreds of verified listings already on the map and new additions coming daily, the platform continues to grow as a vital resource for budget-conscious diners.
