As high tides hit Southern California again, several coastal cities are offering sandbags to residents who want to protect their property. Some locations hand out prefilled bags, while others supply sand and empty bags for people to fill themselves.
In Newport Beach, residents can pick up prefilled sandbags at the Corporation Yard, 592 Superior Ave., at Marina Park, 1600 W. Balboa Blvd., and at the temporary Fire Station No. 1 in the East Ocean Front parking lot near Balboa Pier. Empty bags are available at any Newport Beach fire station and at Lifeguard Headquarters, 70 Newport Pier.
Laguna Beach has prefilled bags for residents at the ACT V parking lot (Lot 16), 1900 Laguna Canyon Road, and at the Aliso Beach East parking lot, 31132 S. Coast Highway. Empty bags to fill are stocked at all four of the city's fire stations: Station 1 at 501 Forest Ave., Station 2 at 285 Agate Street, Station 3 at 2900 Alta Laguna Blvd., and Station 4 at 31646 2nd Ave.
In Huntington Beach, sand and sandbags are offered to residents at the Edison Community Center, 21377 Magnolia St., and at the Warner fire station, 3831 Warner Ave. Sand and bags can also be picked up at the Corporate Yard, 17371 Gothard St., which lists hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Malibu residents can collect prefilled sandbags at the Malibu Equestrian Center, 6225 Merritt Dr. Those who prefer to fill their own can get sand and empty bags at Fire Station 70, 3970 Carbon Canyon Road, at Pacific Coast Highway, at Camp 13, 1252 Encinal Canyon Road, and at the main entrance to Zuma Beach off PCH.
Long Beach is providing sand and sandbags to residents at several sites. They include Fire Station 7 at 2295 Elm St., Fire Station 12 at 1199 E. Artesia Blvd., Fire Station 13 at 2475 Adriatic Ave., and Fire Station 14 at 5200 E. Eliot St. Residents can also go to the Claremont Beach parking lot, 5400 E. Ocean Blvd. Empty sandbags are available at all Long Beach Fire Department neighborhood fire stations.
Because each city runs its own distribution sites and the sources list different arrangements, residents should note whether a location offers prefilled bags or only sand and empty bags. Those heading to a site that requires filling bags themselves will need to be ready to do the work on arrival.
