A documentary short film that pairs the vision of an Academy Award-winning director with the influence of a top NFL quarterback is set to premiere on HBO Max this coming month. The project, titled The Buffalo Miracle, is scheduled for release on November 24 and offers a cinematic look at a specific moment in local history.
The film is directed by Ben Proudfoot and executive-produced by Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen through his production company, Out of Pocket Studios. The narrative focuses on the true story of fast-food workers in Buffalo who opened their establishments to strangers and neighbors, providing shelter during the severe weather event of the previous Christmas week.
The storm depicted in the documentary was described as a once-in-a-generation weather event. It brought hurricane-force winds reaching speeds of up to 80 miles per hour and created snowdrifts that stood 15 feet high. The conditions resulted in wind chill temperatures around 30 below zero, causing whiteout visibility and widespread loss of power and access to infrastructure across the region.
The trailer for the film leverages the city’s reputation as the City of Good Neighbors. It highlights how the shared love for the Bills unites the community, particularly in December when the team is often preparing for a playoff run. Although Allen led the Bills to a 13-3 record in 2022, the team was on the road for a Week 16 matchup against the Chicago Bears at the peak of the blizzard.
Allen has become increasingly involved in the film and production industry in recent years. Beyond his frequent commercial appearances, he launched Out of Pocket Studios over the summer. The company currently produces multiple programs for Paramount in addition to this upcoming HBO Max project.
Director Ben Proudfoot brings significant prestige to the project, holding two Oscar wins for his previous documentary shorts, The Queen of Basketball and The Last Repair Shop. His collaboration with Allen represents an unlikely but effective partnership to bring this local story to a national audience.
The premiere date is strategically chosen for the week of Thanksgiving. This timing coincides with a major football event in which the Bills, led by Allen, will host the Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes at Highmark Stadium for a primetime AFC showdown.
By releasing the documentary during this high-profile week, the production aligns the community’s historical resilience with the current excitement surrounding the Bills’ season. The film serves as both a tribute to the workers who helped their neighbors and a celebration of the city’s enduring spirit.
The project underscores the growing trend of athletes using their platforms to support local cultural initiatives. Through Out of Pocket Studios, Allen continues to expand his creative endeavors while maintaining his focus on football. The documentary provides a visual record of the 2022 storm’s impact and the collective response that followed.
As the release date approaches, viewers can expect a concise and emotional portrayal of the events that defined that winter. The combination of Proudfoot’s acclaimed direction and Allen’s executive oversight ensures that the story of the Buffalo Miracle will receive significant attention on the streaming platform.
