Apple is already thinking about how to evolve the iPhone Duo, even though the foldable has not yet reached store shelves. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman shared new details about the company's plans for future versions on his Power On podcast, published on 2026-10-22.
Earlier in the same episode, Gurman said Apple is testing iPhone Duo 2 models that place Face ID beneath the outer display, and that the company is exploring ways to include an Action button. He then turned his attention further ahead, to a third-generation model he has previously reported on, which is expected in 2028.
According to Gurman, the iPhone Duo 3 is set to be somewhat larger, though not dramatically so. "What I heard, just to be specific about the larger screen version of the Duo, is I heard…it's marginal," he said. The inner screen would grow by what he described as very roughly half an inch.
That increase would not necessarily make the outer display much bigger, Gurman noted. He ruled out a jump to an inner screen of 8.5 or 9 inches, saying the figure would instead land in the "high sevens, very low eights." The current iPhone Duo has a 7.6-inch folding display.
Gurman compared the planned change to the way Apple has gradually enlarged its Pro models in recent years. As an example, he pointed to the move from a 6.7-inch screen on the iPhone 15 Pro Max to 6.9 inches on the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
He was also asked whether a Telephoto camera could come to a future iPhone Duo. "That's on their list. I don't know when that's coming, but that's gonna be hard to do," Gurman answered.
The obstacle, in his view, is not expense. He described it as "purely a physics issue in terms of the depth needed," adding that it will be interesting to see how Apple ends up solving it.
Reaction to the larger-screen idea is mixed. One commenter on the original report said the appeal of the Duo is its small size when folded, noting a fondness for the iPhone 12 mini.
