Dafne Keen says she was offered cocaine at wrap parties when she was as young as 11, recalling experiences from her childhood acting career that left her with little interest in drinking or drugs. The Logan and Deadpool & Wolverine actress spoke about those experiences during a Tuesday appearance on Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside of You podcast.
The discussion turned to her early exposure to substance use after Rosenbaum and Keen began talking about drinking. Keen said she did not think she had ever become drunk enough to experience a hangover. She described wanting to remain in control and linked her lack of interest to what she had witnessed while working as a child actor.
“I was getting offered coke at wrap parties,” Keen said. Asked by Rosenbaum how old she had been, she named ages 11, 12 and 13. She said seeing substance use at that age had made her uninterested in taking part, adding that she had declined the offers: “I was saying no, fortunately.”
Keen explained that her preference for staying sober does not mean she dislikes going out. She enjoys music, dancing and being around other people, she said, and those are her reasons for joining a night out. Drinking, by her account, is not something she needs to enjoy those social occasions.
As a teenager, however, she sometimes concealed her sobriety to avoid pressure to drink. Keen said she would tell people she had already taken something, even though she was completely sober. The excuse allowed her to turn down alcohol without being pushed to join in, she explained while reflecting on how she handled peer pressure.
During the same conversation, Keen also looked back on working with Hugh Jackman in Logan. She played Laura, also known as X-23, Wolverine’s mutant clone and biological daughter. Keen credited Jackman with giving her encouragement and helpful advice, saying his warmth extended beyond their relationship as father and daughter on screen.
Keen described Jackman as a parental figure who took care to protect her on set. She said he made sure her working hours were not abused, that she was enjoying the experience and that she remained unaware of any tensions behind the scenes. “He was so incredibly protective and amazing,” she said.
