Drivers in Meridian, Idaho, are currently managing significant changes to their daily commutes along McMillan Road. Two distinct construction projects are simultaneously reshaping the area, creating a complex network of lane restrictions and closures. One project aims to enhance traffic flow and pedestrian safety, while the other focuses on expanding the city's essential sewer infrastructure to support continued growth.
At the intersection of McMillan and McDermott, the Ada County Highway District is implementing specific safety upgrades. These improvements include the installation of a new traffic signal and the addition of dedicated left-turn lanes. Matt Degan, a representative involved in the project, noted that the pedestrian improvements are expected to make crossing the street significantly safer for local residents.
Local residents Fred and Mary Roberts have lived in this part of Meridian for approximately two years. Despite their relatively short tenure, they have observed rapid changes in their neighborhood. Fred Roberts described the area as growing at an incredible pace, while Mary Roberts highlighted that two entire new neighborhoods have developed since they moved in.
The couple acknowledged that navigating the current construction on McMillan Road presents some challenges. However, they expressed satisfaction with the necessary road maintenance. Fred Roberts characterized the situation as a temporary inconvenience, stating that he and his wife are glad to see the roads being properly taken care of.
The Roberts couple also pointed out specific improvements they have already noticed in the area. They mentioned that a crosswalk that previously consisted of only grass and weeds is now being properly developed, which they view as a sign of steady progress. Mary Roberts added that the community is genuinely grateful for these updates.
Beyond the intersection upgrades, other sections of McMillan Road are affected by different construction activities. At McDermott, the road remains open to traffic but operates with lane restrictions. Farther to the west, a separate stretch of the road is completely closed to allow for sewer work.
This western closure is part of the third and final phase of Meridian's Can Ada Lift Station project. City officials have stated that this infrastructure is necessary to accommodate the ongoing growth in the area. Fred Roberts observed that the construction crew has a substantial task ahead of them to keep up with the developing roads.
Although the construction brings logistical hurdles, Mary Roberts noted that the influx of new residents has fostered a stronger sense of community. She remarked that her neighborhood has become more connected, with residents getting to know one another in a way that she finds enjoyable.
The Ada County Highway District expects the improvements at the McMillan and McDermott intersection to be completed in early November. Meanwhile, the city's final phase of the Can Ada Lift Station project is scheduled to wrap up by December 4, which should alleviate many of the current traffic disruptions for Meridian drivers.
