Filmmaker Michael Mann was taken to a hospital on Saturday after accidentally shooting himself in the leg at a Los Angeles gun range, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. His representatives said he had received treatment and was being released.

The incident happened at approximately 4 p.m. at the Range L.A. Mann was participating in target practice at the sanctioned facility and was attempting to holster a firearm when it discharged, according to the account first reported by TMZ. LAPD confirmed that he was in stable condition at the time of the call.

Mann’s representatives described the wound as minor and subcutaneous. In their statement, they said the firearm discharged accidentally while holstered, causing a superficial injury. Mann is an experienced shooter who has spent decades practicing at gun ranges, according to the source account.

The 83-year-old director’s filmography includes “Thief,” “Manhunter,” “Heat,” “The Insider” and “Miami Vice.” His most recent directing release was “Ferrari” in 2023. The sports biopic featured Adam Driver in the role of Enzo Ferrari, with Penelope Cruz playing Ferrari’s wife, Laura.

Mann is now working on “Heat 2,” the long-awaited follow-up to his 1995 crime drama. The original movie starred Al Pacino and Robert De Niro and was a box office success. Its story centers on the confrontation between two men operating on opposing sides of the law in Los Angeles.

Pacino played Los Angeles Police Department detective Lieutenant Vincent Hanna, while De Niro portrayed professional thief Neil McCauley. Their adversarial relationship is also central to Mann’s conception of the follow-up, which is intended to cover events both before and after those depicted in the first film.

For “Heat 2,” Mann adapted the screenplay from the novel he wrote with Meg Gardiner, published under the same title in 2022. The project combines a prequel and a sequel, exploring the earlier lives of the characters played by Pacino and De Niro. Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale and Driver are expected to be among the cast.

Speaking at a masterclass during France’s Lumiere Festival in 2025, Mann explained that the original film’s characters remained vivid to him. He said the relationship between its two lethal adversaries had inspired his idea for a story extending to either side of the events in “Heat.”
