The 2026-27 Major League Baseball offseason has just begun, and early moves and rumors are already shaping the landscape. With top free agents and trade candidates being ranked, teams are quickly establishing their priorities for the upcoming season. Tuesday's developments highlight three clubs with distinct strategies: the New York Yankees, the New York Mets, and the Texas Rangers.
According to reports from ESPN, the Yankees are considering a bid for Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal. To balance the roster, New York may trade another starting pitcher to address needs at other positions. The Yankees currently possess a deep rotation that includes Cam Schlittler, Max Fried, Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, and Ryan Weathers. While the team does not strictly need to add to its staff, the allure of elite pitching remains strong.
Should the Yankees pursue Skubal, right-hander Will Warren is viewed as the most logical trade chip. Warren pitched 156 innings with a 3.92 ERA in the previous season and has four years of team control left. His cost-effective contract makes him a valuable asset in negotiations. The organization also seeks improvements at second base, third base, and potentially in center field and catching.
Meanwhile, the Mets are actively working to strengthen their pitching staff. The Athletic reports that New York is engaged in discussions across the market, looking at both top-tier free agents like Skubal and veteran options in the middle tier. Currently, only Nolan McLean and Christian Scott are firmly locked into the 2027 rotation. Other pitchers on the depth chart include Zac Thornton, Kodai Senga, Sean Manaea, and Tylor Megill, who is recovering from UCL surgery.
The Mets could also explore trade options, though they are reportedly hesitant to part with prospects. President of baseball operations David Stearns prefers to avoid long-term contracts for pitchers, a stance that could complicate a pursuit of Skubal. The team clearly needs at least one new starter, and potentially more, to reduce the burden on younger arms like Thornton and Jonah Tong.
In Texas, the Rangers are shifting their focus to center field after Gold Glove finalist Evan Carter underwent right hip surgery last week. Rangers president of baseball operations Chris Young announced on Monday that Carter will miss the start of the 2027 season. This development forces the team to seek immediate replacement options, although they remain confident in Carter's long-term value.
Young noted via MLB.com that the team must be cognizant of Carter's recovery and find a backfill to handle the position if there are setbacks. While left fielder Wyatt Langford, also a Gold Glove finalist, could move to center, he is considered best suited for left field. The free agent market offers limited options in center field, with players like Trent Grisham, Luis Robert Jr., and Daulton Varsho available but carrying risks of age or injury.
The Rangers may also look at trade candidates such as Jarren Duran or Steven Kwan, though Kwan would likely command a high price. Alternatively, a defense-first stopgap like Denzel Clarke or Blake Perkins could be a viable short-term solution while Carter recovers.
