NBCUniversal and Hornbill Capital have jointly led an $80 million Series C fundraising round for EloElo Group, an Indian producer of microdramas. The company was founded by Saurabh Pandey, who previously served as an executive at Flipkart. This substantial influx of capital is designed to support the startup's next phase of growth and operational expansion.
The funds will primarily be used by the operator of the Story TV platform to produce new vertical dramas. A key strategic goal is to export these productions to international markets, with a specific focus on reaching viewers in the United States. This investment follows a recent move by NBCUniversal's Peacock streaming service, which launched an unscripted vertical series titled Campus Confidential: Miami. That release was part of a broader initiative to leverage mobile content for engaging new audiences.
Deepak Arya, executive vice president of corporate strategy and development at NBCUniversal, emphasized the potential of this new media format in a statement. He noted that the company sees a significant opportunity in mobile-first storytelling and emerging formats like microdramas to meet evolving viewing habits. Arya highlighted that under Pandey's leadership, EloElo has developed a differentiated approach with a clear focus on content and storytelling, positioning the firm for long-term success.
Arya expressed enthusiasm for bringing NBCUniversal's global capabilities to the partnership as EloElo expands beyond its home market in India. The collaboration aims to capitalize on the growing consumer demand for short-form content that is easily accessible on mobile devices. This strategic alignment allows the Indian producer to access wider distribution channels and production resources.
EloElo Group, which was launched in Bengaluru, India, in 2020, has built a significant catalog over the past few years. The company points to an expanding slate of more than 5,000 microdramas available in six different languages. It also utilizes a production engine known as Dolphin AI to streamline its content creation processes. This technological infrastructure is central to its ability to scale output efficiently.
The platform reports strong user engagement across its various applications. EloElo Group states that it has accumulated over 40 million monthly active users. This large user base provides a solid foundation for the company as it prepares to enter new territories. The existing audience metrics suggest a high level of interest in the short-form drama format among current subscribers.
Saurabh Pandey, founder and CEO of EloElo Group, outlined how the new capital will be deployed in a statement. He said the Series C investment will deepen the company's content offerings across multiple languages. The funds will also place a sharper focus on premium originals and double down on the development of the Dolphin AI system.
Pandey indicated that the goal is to take the platform to more audiences and more markets. By leveraging the Series C funding, EloElo aims to enhance the quality and quantity of its original content. This strategy is intended to solidify its position in the competitive landscape of digital entertainment and mobile streaming.
Microdramas have gained significant traction in North America and other international regions following their emergence from China during the pandemic era. These productions are typically structured in episodes ranging from 60 to 90 seconds in length. They are strategically written with specific narrative devices, including a hook, a spike, and a cliffhanger, to encourage viewers to proceed to the next episode.
