Neve Campbell has officially confirmed that she will return to the role of Sidney Prescott for the eighth installment of the Scream franchise. The actress made the announcement on Monday night during an interview with the Associated Press. She is set to reprise the character who has defined the horror genre for nearly three decades. This marks her continued involvement in the long-running series that has seen various creative shifts over the years.

During the discussion, Campbell revealed that she has two television shows currently in development, one of which has already been sold. She noted that Scream 8 is also in the pipeline. When asked for specific details about the new film, she kept the information close, stating that she could never tell anyone anything about it. However, she added with a laugh that she would be in it.

Campbell has been a central figure in the franchise since the original 1996 film directed by Wes Craven. She starred in the first four installments before the series was revamped with the 2022 release of Scream. That film shifted focus to the Carpenter sisters, played by Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, while Campbell appeared in a smaller supporting role.

The franchise experienced significant changes following the release of Scream VI. Campbell had notably sat out of that film due to salary disputes. After the movie’s release, Barrera was fired from the franchise over her social media posts regarding the Israel-Hamas war. Following that departure, Ortega voluntarily exited the series.

Campbell returned for Scream 7, produced by Spyglass Media and Paramount Pictures. The film was released in February and centered on Sidney and her onscreen daughter Tatum, who is played by Isabel May. The movie became the highest-grossing entry in the franchise, earning $208 million worldwide against a budget of $45 million.

One month after the release of Scream 7, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Scream 8 was in development at Spyglass. The script is being written by sisters Lilla and Nora Zuckerman. The project is moving forward with Campbell back at the center of the story.

Kevin Williamson, who wrote the original 1996 film and directed Scream 7, has indicated that he does not intend to write or direct the eighth film. He spoke to Hello Sidney in March about his future plans with the franchise.

Williamson stated that he wants to direct another film he has written, which is currently waiting for him to find the time. He mentioned that he is also working on a couple of TV shows that he is excited about. He suggested that he might direct one of those projects instead. For the next Scream film, he said he will probably step back and just be a part of the family again.
