The San Francisco 49ers came close to reuniting with wide receiver Jauan Jennings in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings earlier this month. However, head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed on Wednesday that the deal fell through after Jennings spoke with him via video call and expressed his desire to remain in Minnesota.
According to sources, the two teams had reached a stage where the Vikings permitted Jennings to consult with Shanahan before finalizing the transaction. The coach explained that the 49ers wanted to ensure Jennings was comfortable with the move before proceeding. They reached an agreement that allowed them to hold a FaceTime conversation to discuss the potential reunion.
Shanahan described the interaction as positive and noted that Jennings did not immediately rule out the idea. The receiver told the coach that he was enjoying his time in Minnesota and felt happy with his current situation. Shanahan stated that the conversation was good and that Jennings' reasoning made sense, leading to the decision not to complete the trade.
A reunion would have marked the latest in a series of moves by the 49ers to bring back former players. During the recent offseason, the team re signed linebacker Dre Greenlaw and receiver Deebo Samuel. Additionally, last week saw the return of defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, who was traded to San Francisco six years after leaving for the Indianapolis Colts.
Given the 49ers' strong start to the season and Jennings' limited role in the Vikings' offense, multiple sources expressed surprise at the outcome. Jennings has recorded six catches for 54 yards on 10 targets this season. His previous tenure in San Francisco ended on a high note, with him finishing his final year with 55 receptions, 643 yards, and nine touchdowns despite dealing with several injuries.
Jennings initially hoped for a long term contract before the 2025 season but settled for a one year deal with Minnesota worth eight million dollars, with potential incentives raising the total to thirteen million. Shanahan emphasized that there is no bad blood between the team and the receiver. He noted that Jennings is surrounded by good people in Minnesota and that the coach agreed with his decision to stay.
With the Jennings trade off the table, the 49ers continue to seek additional help at the receiver position. The team is currently dealing with injuries to key players, including Mike Evans, Demarcus Robinson, Deebo Samuel, and De'Zhaun Stribling. Robinson was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice, while Evans and Samuel did not take the field. Shanahan expressed optimism about Evans' progress but indicated that Samuel is more likely to return next week against the Dallas Cowboys than in this week's game against the Las Vegas Raiders.
As the trade deadline approaches on Tuesday, the 49ers are looking for a receiver who can adapt quickly to their offensive system. Shanahan pointed to the 2019 acquisition of Emmanuel Sanders as an example of a seamless fit, noting that Sanders immediately became a key part of the team's Super Bowl run. However, the coach cautioned that such instant success is rare and that finding the right player is a difficult task.
Shanahan acknowledged the challenge of integrating new receivers into the offense. He stated that while Sanders was a special case, most players require time to adjust. The coaching staff is focused on identifying a player who can contribute effectively in the short term to support the team's current success.
