Sophomore Finley Greear scored twice to carry Monroe to a 3-1 win over Mountlake Terrace in a district girls soccer match on Thursday, Oct. 29. The result moves the Bearcats into a quarterfinal against Stanwood on Saturday.
Monroe, now 10-4-3 overall, went into halftime without a goal but changed the match after the break. Greear and fellow sophomore Sojo Skurdal scored within three minutes of each other, giving the Bearcats a lead that changed the feel of the game.
Mountlake Terrace (7-9-2) answered about 12 minutes later. Senior Lily Sims finished off a rebound to cut into the deficit. Late in the match, though, Greear settled it. She got free on a breakaway and put her second goal of the night into the far post, which sealed the win for Monroe.
In Edmonds, the home side kept its season alive with a 4-0 victory over Marysville Getchell. Edmonds-Woodway (9-5-3) got goals from four different players: Aki Ikegami, Bella Drietzler, Izzy Han and Betsy Myers. Goalkeepers Morgan Smith and Ella Bryant combined on the shutout.
The loss ended Marysville Getchell's year with a record of 7-8-1. Edmonds-Woodway will keep playing and travels to Ferndale on Saturday.
