Russell Brand told police he had lived a "very promiscuous" life and that consensual sexual encounters had been "unfavourably reframed decades later", a jury heard on Tuesday at his trial in London.

The 51-year-old comedian is accused of seven offences against six women, with the allegations covering a 10-year period starting in 1999. He denies all of the charges. Brand sat in the dock at Southwark crown court wearing a grey suit and a pale blue shirt as his statements to police were read aloud.

Jurors were told that Brand was interviewed four times between November 2023 and July 2025. In each interview he read out a prepared statement, insisting he had "never engaged in any non-consensual sexual activity".

In his first statement, dated 16 November 2023, Brand said: "I led a very promiscuous life in the past, which I have spent years openly denouncing." He blamed the allegations on what he called a "defamatory and fictitious" documentary, broadcast on 16 September 2023 alongside two national newspaper publications. The reporting was a joint effort by Channel 4, the Times and the Sunday Times. He said it contained false, anonymised claims that led to "unprecedented media reporting", and that both the media and police then invited further allegations, which resulted in encounters being "invented or reimagined".

Addressing an allegation from 2004 that he touched an MTV worker's breasts, dragged her into a toilet and raped her, Brand said he did not recall meeting the woman. "At no point would I have touched [her] breasts unless it was consensual," he said. "I have had consensual sex in toilet cubicles during parties. I have never forced anyone into a toilet and I have never forced my penis into anyone's mouth."

In a statement on 14 December 2023, he said he did not remember the women who had come forward. He added that it was "entirely possible" he had met them and that they may have engaged in consensual sexual activity or physical contact "that has since been reimagined".

Brand also described his celebrity lifestyle. He said his dealings with members of the public were "friendly, consensual and warm", often involving physical contact at live shows, press events, junkets and book signings. He said he had kissed hundreds of people at press events, with photos available online, and that he was aware anything he did in public could be photographed or recorded and end up in the tabloids. He also said he routinely made provocative jokes and comments.

On his sexual history, he said he sometimes found reasons to leave, or asked casual partners to leave, soon after an encounter ended. He said he had sexual encounters in "countless locations and scenarios", often with people he had just met, and argued that media coverage and advertisements for complainants had caused consensual encounters to be reframed.

Brand gave similar statements in interviews on 17 January 2024 and 17 July 2025. After each, when police asked questions, he replied: "I have nothing further to add at this time."

He faces three counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault. On Tuesday, an allegation of indecent assault was changed to a charge of attempted indecent assault. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges, and the trial continues.
