Russia attacked Kyiv with ballistic missiles on the evening of 26 October, killing one person and injuring 10 others, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko and the city's military administration. Most of the wounded are students who lived in a university dormitory.
Ukraine's Air Force first warned of a ballistic missile threat from the Russian city of Bryansk at 21:41. Several later reports said missiles were heading toward the capital from Chernihiv Oblast. Explosions were heard in Kyiv a few minutes afterward.
Klitschko said a strike was recorded near a metro station in the Desnianskyi district. A strike was also reported near a residential building in the same district, where early information suggested that people might be trapped inside.
The attack also damaged medical facilities in the Dniprovskyi district. Klitschko reported that the blast wave shattered windows in the intensive care unit of one hospital. Windows were also broken in two departments of another medical facility in that district. No patients or medical staff were hurt.
A building in a non-residential part of the Dniprovskyi district was hit as well. Early reports indicated that one person had been killed near a nearby supermarket.
Two emergency medical workers who arrived at the scene were among the injured: a paramedic and an emergency medical technician. Their injuries were not believed to be critical.
The Kyiv City Military Administration said student accommodation belonging to an educational institution was damaged in the Desnianskyi district. Klitschko wrote that a 20-year-old woman was injured near the building.
The casualty count rose through the night. At 22:41, five people were known to be injured in the capital, and the figure later climbed to seven. By 23:24, authorities confirmed one death and 10 injuries.
