Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato have teamed up again, this time for a beauty campaign built on nostalgia for their early careers.
The collaboration is for Gomez's Rare Beauty brand and is titled "Still Making Each Other Blush." It launches The Delena: Soft Pinch Blush Bundle, which pairs Rare Beauty's Soft Pinch Liquid Blush in the two stars' favorite shades, Hope and Virtue, with a Soft Pinch Blush Brush. The bundle is currently available on the Rare Beauty website.
The name Delena comes from fans, who coined it for the duo during their Disney Channel years in the late 2000s, when the two often described themselves as best friends. They later distanced themselves from each other publicly. Gomez and Lovato first became friends as child actors on the set of Barney & Friends, before each rose to fame through Disney's Wizards of Waverly Place and Camp Rock.
Visually, the campaign pays tribute to the poster for their 2009 Disney Channel Original Movie Princess Protection Program. In the film, they played a princess forced to flee her country and an ordinary girl assigned to help hide her identity.
The pair also released a clip of roughly four minutes that echoes the vlog-style YouTube videos they regularly made together in 2008. In it, they answer questions, recall their signature red carpet pose, and lip-sync and dance to "One and the Same," which they recorded for the Princess Protection Program soundtrack.
Looking back on filming the song's music video, Gomez said: "I felt like that was our moment when we felt like Avril Lavigne. We were so into it." Lovato added, "And Kelly Clarkson. Always Kelly Clarkson."
The reunion follows a period of distance. In a May 2020 cover story interview with Harper's Bazaar, Lovato said she was not close with Gomez. "When you grow up with somebody, you're always going to have love for them," she said. "But I'm not friends with her.."
Their first public reunion in recent times came in April of this year, when Gomez attended a show on Lovato's It's Not That Deep Tour in Orlando.
Lovato addressed the relationship in a new interview with Elle. "There have been different chapters throughout our lives, and naturally, friends are in each other's lives heavily at times, and then sometimes you're not in constant communication," she said. "But Selena is someone that I've always loved and adored. It's really great to be in a place today where we can collaborate on things, but also just hang out and spend time together."
