Apple's iPhone Duo is only beginning to reach early customers, yet Android developers are already releasing apps that mimic some of its best-known features. One of the first examples is Foldy, which recreates the Duo's tent mode experience on Android foldables.
Showing useful information while a foldable is propped up in tent mode is not a common capability on Android. The Motorola Razr Fold is one of the few book-style foldables to offer it, built into its always-on display. Pixel phones have comparable functionality, but only while they are charging. The iPhone Duo's StandBy mode, by contrast, is the kind of feature people could easily want on other devices.
Foldy aims to fill that gap. The app is free to download, though its most useful features sit behind a premium unlock priced at 90 cents per month or $9 for a lifetime purchase.
According to 9to5Google's testing on a Galaxy Z Fold 8, the app quickly turned tent mode into a dual-pane hub. The panes can display the date and time, or information pulled from the user's calendar.
The standout feature, however, is the option to turn any Android widget into a pane. That opens the door to practical uses such as Google Home controls or music app controls.
Foldy also lets users train the app to recognize when it should switch on. In testing, this worked well: the app detected when the device was partially open and resting on its side, and started its StandBy-style display as soon as those conditions were met.
Foldy is not the only example of Android developers quickly putting their own spin on iPhone Duo apps. Another is Foldman, which turns a foldable into a Walkman-style cassette player. It resembles a Duo app that has been widely discussed, but adds extras such as YouTube Music integration.
The reviewer sees this as a positive development. One of the biggest expected benefits of Apple entering the foldable market was that it would encourage new app experiences for Android foldables, and they said they hope such efforts spread to many more Android apps.
The trend comes amid broader attention on foldables. Samsung has said the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is more popular than ever thanks to the iPhone Duo, and analysts expect foldable display shipments to rise 44% in 2026 as wider-format folds arrive.
