Baltimore Ravens quarterback Tyler Huntley is out for the rest of the 2026 season with a turf toe injury to his right foot, according to sources speaking with ESPN's Adam Schefter and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport on Wednesday. The diagnosis, which was confirmed after medical testing, indicates that the 28-year-old signal caller requires surgery to recover.
The injury occurred during the second quarter of the Ravens' 36-10 defeat at the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver brought Huntley down by twisting the quarterback to the ground after Huntley had already released the ball. This setback significantly complicates the already troubled quarterback situation for the Baltimore franchise.
The team is also navigating the absence of starting quarterback Lamar Jackson, who is out indefinitely with a right thumb injury. Jackson sustained the injury on the very first snap of Sunday's game. Coach Jesse Minter described the thumb issue as potentially season-ending, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the offensive leadership.
With both Jackson and Huntley unavailable, the Ravens will turn to undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano to make his first career start. Fagnano is scheduled to take the field Thursday night against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Although the rookie wore a brace on his right ankle during practice on Tuesday, he was a full participant and is expected to play.
Fagnano's impending start marks a historic moment for the league. He will become the second undrafted quarterback to make his first career NFL start in a primetime slot. The previous player to achieve this milestone was Cooper Rush, who led the Dallas Cowboys on a game-winning drive against the Minnesota Vikings in 2021.
The depth chart for the Ravens at quarterback is now composed of players with very limited professional experience. The team's top three options, Fagnano, Austin Reed, and Kedon Slovis, have a combined total of only 23 career pass attempts and 44 total snaps in the NFL. Notably, this group has thrown zero touchdown passes in their professional careers combined.
To bolster the roster, the Ravens recently added Reed to their practice squad on Monday. They followed up by signing Slovis off the Green Bay Packers' practice squad on Tuesday. These moves were likely intended to provide additional depth, though the immediate need for a starting signal caller has shifted focus to Fagnano.
Huntley had been serving as the top backup for the Ravens this season. He started three games while filling in for Jackson, including a notable overtime comeback victory in Atlanta on October 11. His departure leaves the team without a proven veteran option to manage the offense.
In his seven-year career, the undrafted product from the University of Utah holds a record of 8-11 as a starter. Over the course of his professional journey, Huntley has thrown 17 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions. His season-ending injury forces the coaching staff to rely on inexperience for the final stretch of the year.
