The Philadelphia Eagles are set to change their starting quarterback for the upcoming Sunday contest against the New York Giants, according to sources speaking with NFL Network and ESPN. Joe Milton will take the reins under center, effectively ending the tenure of Tanner McKee as the primary signal-caller for the franchise.
This decision marks the third different starting quarterback for Philadelphia this season. McKee, who has started the last three games, is being replaced in a move that signals a notable shift in the team's approach to the position.
The change in plans represents a public reversal for the coaching staff. As recently as Monday, head coach Nick Sirianni indicated that the team would continue to stick with McKee as the starter. The switch to Milton comes only a few days after that public statement, highlighting the urgency within the organization.
Milton was acquired by the Eagles on October 16, when they signed him from the Dallas Cowboys practice squad. This transaction occurred just one day before the team placed Jalen Hurts on injured reserve. Shortly after, the Eagles and Hurts' agent announced that the franchise quarterback would be sidelined indefinitely after medical tests revealed multiple blood clots in both lungs. At the time, sources indicated that Hurts was expected to miss the remainder of the season.
Milton spent the previous season serving as the backup to Dak Prescott in Dallas. He appeared in four games off the bench during that period. The quarterback originally joined the Cowboys in April 2025 through a trade with the New England Patriots, who had selected him in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL draft.
Earlier this year, Milton was waived by Dallas after losing the internal competition for the backup quarterback role to Sam Howell. However, the Cowboys brought him back to their practice squad just days after releasing him, keeping him within their organization until the Eagles showed interest.
The Eagles currently sit at a 2-6 record and have lost their last six consecutive games. The team enters Week 9 in last place in the NFC East division. During his time as the starter, McKee has completed 63.2% of his passes for 638 yards. He has thrown two touchdown passes and two interceptions over the past three games.
The decision to turn to Milton comes as the team looks for a new spark to reverse their recent slide. With the season progressing, the Eagles are exploring all available options at the quarterback position to improve their performance on the field.
