Tesla reported a record uptake of its Full Self-Driving (Supervised) software among new car buyers in the third quarter of 2026, with more than 75 percent of North American deliveries including an FSD subscription. The figure compares with 55 percent in the previous quarter, an increase of nearly 20 percentage points.

The numbers appeared in the company's Q3 Shareholder Deck, which described North America as Tesla's most mature market. The company wrote that the attach rate "continued to grow" and said it believes FSD is "driving demand in markets where it is available." It added that it continues to work with regulators to win approval in other markets.

Active FSD subscriptions have grown to 1.75 million, a rise of 67 percent from a year earlier. For the first time, more than half of paying customers are on the monthly plan, which costs $99 per month in the United States.

Chief executive Elon Musk commented on the results in a post on October 21, 2026, writing: "People are buying FSD with a car attached, not the other way around."

The shift toward subscriptions has sped up since Tesla ended the one-time purchase option in most markets earlier this year. A recurring-payment model gives the company better visibility into revenue and improves margins compared with large upfront payments. With three-quarters of North American deliveries now including FSD, the software has become a significant contributor to Tesla's economics and ancillary revenue.

Expansion beyond North America could lift attach rates further. FSD is now offered in nine European Union countries, and more than 100,000 customers there have driven over 160 million kilometers with it. Tesla is seeking broader approval across the EU, and a related vote is expected in December. Similar progress in other markets could support higher attach rates outside North America.

The software figures arrived alongside strong vehicle numbers. Tesla delivered 486,532 vehicles in the quarter and ended it with its largest passenger-vehicle backlog in four years. Battery supply continued to limit production volume, but the company has pointed to FSD as a differentiator that helps sustain demand.

As the supervised driving capabilities improve, the attach rate is likely to keep rising. At face value, it serves as a key measure of how effectively Tesla is converting vehicle sales into progress on autonomy.
