The first snow of the season arrived at ski areas across New England over the weekend, and resort officials marked the occasion with enthusiastic posts on social media.
In Maine, Sunday River announced the news on its Facebook page on Saturday with the line "WE'VE GOT NATURAL SNOWFALL FOLKS!" Officials said temperatures at the higher summits dropped just enough for flakes to accumulate rather than simply fall, and they turned their attention to the coming start of snowmaking. Later that day, the resort shared more photos, noting that "just one post for the first snowfall is never enough." Sunday River opened on Nov. 14 last year but has not yet announced its opening day for this season.
At Bretton Woods in New Hampshire, "Slopeside Storyteller" Céline McArthur said in a video posted Saturday that winter was making its first appearance. A light dusting coated the summit of Mount Rosebrook, she said, and "we're feeling that first-snow magic." She added that the countdown to opening day was officially on. Bretton Woods, which Boston.com readers named the best ski resort in New Hampshire earlier this year, is set to open Nov. 28.
Vermont's Jay Peak, chosen by Boston.com readers as the state's best ski resort earlier this year, also saw snow over the weekend. The resort posted a photo of a snow-covered trail on Saturday with the message "Welcome November." Officials said snowmaking has officially begun there, while "mother nature decided to sweeten the deal with some post trick-or-treating snow overnight." Jay Peak traditionally opens the day after Thanksgiving, a custom that goes back decades, and this year that falls on Nov. 28.
Other resorts focused on the start of their snowmaking operations. Stowe Mountain Resort wrote on Facebook on Sunday that its snowmaking team began work the previous night to prepare the mountain for the 2025/26 season. The crew will keep producing snow for as long as temperatures remain consistently cold, officials said. Stowe plans to open its slopes Nov. 22.
Killington, also in Vermont, posted a video Sunday of workers making snow and declared that "the switch has been flipped." The resort said 175 snow guns were firing across the mountain over the weekend, a Killington record for the start of a season. No opening date has been set, though officials said winter is officially on at the resort. Killington opened on Nov. 14 last year.
