November is when the College Football Playoff picture truly sharpens, and this season's race is shaping up to be among the most competitive ever. The first CFP Rankings delivered plenty of surprises, leaving some presumed locks on the bubble. No. 11 Notre Dame would barely make the field as it stands, No. 12 Ohio State sits on the outside, and the committee sent warning signals to No. 9 BYU despite its win over the Fighting Irish. In the SEC, every week now amounts to an elimination game for teams near the top. Here are the seven Week 10 games that will define the playoff race.
No. 1 Miami at No. 11 Notre Dame lost some luster when Hurricanes wide receiver Malachi Toney was ruled out with an ankle injury, but the stakes remain enormous for both sides. Notre Dame likely needs a win over the top-ranked team in the country to reach the playoff after landing on the edge of the bubble. Miami faces real danger too: with an unimpressive schedule and only one top-25 victory, a single loss could send the Hurricanes tumbling from No. 1 to the fringe of the field.
No. 9 BYU travels to No. 3 Utah for a massive game in Salt Lake City. Despite wins over Notre Dame and No. 22 Arizona, the Cougars are on the playoff's edge, and their loss to UCF continues to weigh them down. A defeat against the Utes would likely end their postseason hopes. Utah holds a prime position at No. 3 despite just one ranked victory, with its consistent dominance rating well in the advanced metrics, but a loss to BYU could do serious damage with more difficult games ahead.
No. 5 Alabama visits No. 14 LSU in a marquee matchup at Death Valley. The Crimson Tide look like the most overranked team in the rankings by a wide margin, and the Tigers have a chance to prove it. LSU sits outside the field without a ranked win, but its defense has been a monstrous unit under Lane Kiffin. Alabama's offense has been excellent, yet the Tide have been inconsistent since beating Mississippi State nearly a month ago, losing by 16 points to a Tennessee team ranked eight spots behind them with the same number of losses, and also falling to Georgia. A third loss could trigger a dramatic plunge.
No. 2 Georgia at No. 10 Ole Miss is a clear elimination game for the Rebels, one of the SEC's most inconsistent teams. Ole Miss has produced incredible highs, including a demolition of Missouri and a win over LSU, but a total no-show against Florida and a first-half collapse against Texas have raised questions about its defensive ceiling. Georgia will quickly reveal whether the Rebels are built for this moment.
No. 23 Oregon at No. 12 Ohio State amounts to a last stand for the Buckeyes, who have two losses, including a 30-18 showing against USC that raised major red flags. Ohio State has not looked the part with Luke Fahey under center, and the defense is starting to regress as well. Oregon lacks a realistic path to the playoff but is talented enough to play spoiler.
No. 19 Iowa at Northwestern carries quiet significance for a Big Ten that received little love in the initial rankings, with 6-2 Northwestern landing outside the top 25 entirely. There is still time for a 10-2 Big Ten team to enter the conversation. Iowa is finding its offensive momentum after a 30-0 win over Wisconsin, while Northwestern lost by only six points on the road at Indiana and now faces Iowa and Ohio State in successive weeks. Win both, and the Wildcats are likely in the playoff.
Finally, UTSA visits FAU on a nationally televised Thursday night. The Roadrunners have quietly flown under the radar at 7-1, with their only loss coming against No. 7 Texas, and remain undefeated in American Conference play. A road test against Zach Kittley's high-octane FAU offense presents an intriguing obstacle for a team suddenly in position to crash the playoff party.
