A shooting inside a Spirit Halloween store in Fairfield, California, left one person dead and six others injured late Friday, according to the Fairfield Police Department. The store, which sells costumes and seasonal decorations, is located at the Solano Town Center.

In a statement posted to social media, police said the gunfire stemmed from "a targeted incident involving one suspect" inside the store. Authorities said Saturday that they would not release further details about the shooting, including the identities of the victims.

All seven victims, including the person who died, suffered gunshot wounds. The six survivors were taken to hospitals for treatment, and at least three of them were in critical condition.

The FBI's Sacramento office said on X that it was sending its evidence response team to assist Fairfield police. A police statement posted around midnight early Saturday said detectives were interviewing witnesses in an effort to identify the suspect.

"This is still a very active crime scene," the department said. "Detectives are speaking with witnesses and diligently working to identify the suspect responsible for this horrific shooting."

Police also addressed the effect on the community, noting that many Halloween events and celebrations were planned for Saturday. "We understand that an incident of this nature is frightening and deeply unsettling," the department said, urging residents to "remain vigilant, look out for one another, and report any suspicious activity."

Solano Town Center, which is home to 130 stores and restaurants, stayed open Saturday. However, the mall canceled its planned trick-or-treating event for later in the day "in light of last night's event." In its statement, the mall thanked the public for their "patience and understanding during this time."

Fairfield is about 37 miles (60 kilometers) southwest of Sacramento.
