Adam Driver has closed the door on revisiting the role that made him famous. The actor confirmed he will not take part in the planned revival of "Girls," the HBO series that served as his breakout, though he made a point of wishing the returning cast well.
Driver addressed the question while promoting his role in James Gray's new movie "Paper Tiger." Speaking with Cinema Blend, he was asked directly whether he plans to appear in the revival. His answer was brief and unambiguous: "No, but I wish them the best of luck."
Word of the new "Girls" series first broke in mid-October. Creator and star Lena Dunham will return as Hannah Horvath, with co-stars Allison Williams back as Marnie Michaels, Jemima Kirke as Jessa Johansson and Zosia Mamet as Shoshanna Shapiro. Andrew Rannells is also set to reprise his role as Elijah Krantz.
The revival is planned as a limited run of five episodes on HBO. Production on the new series is scheduled to begin in 2027, with much of the original ensemble already confirmed to return.
Driver played Hannah's boyfriend on the original series, and his career accelerated sharply after that run. He went on to portray Kylo Ren in three "Star Wars" movies and assembled a long list of collaborations with some of the most prominent filmmakers in the business.
His credits include "Marriage Story" and "The Meyerowitz Stories" for Noah Baumbach, "The Last Duel" and "House of Gucci" for Ridley Scott, and "Ferrari" for Michael Mann, along with this year's "Misty Green." He has also worked with Jim Jarmusch on three films: "Paterson," "The Dead Don't Die" and "Father Mother Sister Brother."
His decision to sit out the revival arrives on the heels of Dunham's recent memoir "Famesick," in which she described a tumultuous relationship with Driver during the show's run. "He could be short-tempered and verbally aggressive, condescending and physically imposing," Dunham writes. "He could also be protective, loving even."
Still, her account ends on a warmer note. After the last episode of "Girls" wrapped, Dunham says Driver told her, "I hope you know I'll always love you," before he said goodbye.
