Lee Sung Jin, the acclaimed creator of the hit series Beef, has officially launched his new production company, Lila Pictures. The announcement, made on Wednesday, signals a continued strong partnership between the writer and director and the streaming platform Netflix. The new entity is designed to support the development of scripted television series and feature films under Lee’s existing agreement with the network.
The production company takes its name from a Sanskrit term that translates to divine play. Lee intends to use the Lila Pictures banner to write, direct, and executive produce various projects. Beyond personal creative work, the company aims to invest in the next generation of creative voices in the industry.
Hyunji Ward has been appointed as the senior vice president of film and television for Lila Pictures. Ward began her career at UTA and spent the last four years working at TeaTime Pictures, which is associated with actress Dakota Johnson. Her experience in both talent representation and independent production makes her a strategic addition to the new venture.
Alongside the company launch, two new drama series currently in development were revealed. The first is a limited drama series titled The Only Child. This project marks a reunion for Lee with longtime collaborators Ali Wong and Ava Wong Davies. Wong, who starred in the first season of Beef, will both produce and star in the series. She will portray the mother of a professional archer who is preparing to compete for her first gold medal. Davies, known for her work on the series Industry, will also be involved in the project.
The second announced project is a drama series called Citizen’s Arrest. Created by Gene Hong, who previously worked on Beef, the show follows two longtime friends and neighbors. Their shared obsession with solving a local crime serves as a distraction from the personal crises neither character is prepared to address directly.
The launch of Lila Pictures comes on the back of significant success for Lee’s previous work. Beef, a two-season anthology series, has received 29 Emmy nominations, resulting in 11 wins. Lee himself was nominated for both writing and directing. He made history by becoming the first Asian creator to secure multiple Emmy nominations across the categories of writing, directing, and producing for the same series.
In a statement regarding the new venture, Lee expressed enthusiasm for the launch. He noted that the support of Netflix and the assistance of Hyunji Ward were crucial to the company’s formation. He described the move as just the beginning of a larger creative journey and even mentioned that merchandise would be part of the plan.
Beyond the new production company, Lee has been active in other major projects. He recently collaborated with Joanna Calo, known for The Bear, to write an X-Men film for Marvel Studios. Additionally, he served as an executive producer on the film Lurker, directed by Alex Russell.
The establishment of Lila Pictures highlights the growing influence of Asian creators in Hollywood. By formalizing his production capabilities, Lee is positioning himself to develop a wider range of stories and talent. The partnership with Netflix ensures a direct path for these new projects to reach global audiences.
As the entertainment industry continues to evolve, the launch of such a company underscores the importance of dedicated creative hubs. Lila Pictures aims to foster a collaborative environment that supports diverse voices. With two distinct drama series already in the pipeline, the company is expected to make a notable impact in the coming years.
