Brighton moved within two points of Premier League leaders Manchester City after winning 1-0 at the Etihad on Saturday. The result strengthened third-placed Brighton’s hopes of mounting a title challenge while giving City a second consecutive defeat in the league after their perfect start to the campaign.
The victory marked a breakthrough for Brighton, who had failed to win any of their previous 17 away meetings with City. Success on their 18th attempt added to the significance of a season in which they have already convincingly beaten champions Arsenal. Brighton have never lifted a major trophy, but those results have provided evidence of their ability to compete with the title contenders.
For Fabian Hurzeler’s side, Saturday’s meeting also offered a chance to respond to their League Cup disappointment against the same opponents on Wednesday. Brighton had taken the lead twice at the Etihad in that match before losing a penalty shootout, an outcome that left Hurzeler feeling aggrieved.
This time, Brighton made their advantage last. Yasin Ayari put the visitors ahead in the 11th minute, and his goal ultimately separated the teams. Unlike their midweek encounter, Brighton were able to protect the lead through to the final whistle and leave with a victory.
Goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen played a central role as City applied sustained pressure after half-time. His performance helped Brighton withstand the hosts’ efforts to find an equaliser. The visitors also had an opportunity to extend their advantage late in the match, when Jack Hinshelwood sent an effort into the side netting.
City’s latest setback followed an opening run of seven straight league wins under Enzo Maresca. That sequence had given him a flawless start in the competition after taking on the task of succeeding Pep Guardiola. Two successive losses have now left the leaders vulnerable to being overtaken.
Arsenal can move to the top of the table if they avoid defeat at Liverpool on Sunday. City’s loss therefore created an opening for the reigning champions as well as bringing Brighton closer to first place.
The 10-time English champions also face uncertainty beyond their performances on the pitch. City have appealed a guilty verdict involving more than 100 charges of breaching Premier League financial rules. If the ruling stands, they are likely to receive a substantial points deduction and could face relegation from the top flight.
