Common is adding a new producing credit to his resume. The Academy Award, Emmy and Grammy-winning artist and actor has come on board Dana Nachman's documentary short 'The Second Life of Freddie Nole' as an executive producer, Variety has learned exclusively.
The film centers on a man whose routine-looking day turns out to be anything but ordinary. Freddie Nole makes the drive to a Pennsylvania prison to greet a man who has just been released, providing a ride, a meal and clean clothes, along with something harder to quantify: proof that somebody is waiting on the outside.
As the vérité road trip plays out, viewers learn about Nole's own striking past. He was sentenced to life in prison at 17 years old and went on to spend nearly 50 years incarcerated before winning back his freedom.
'The Second Life of Freddie Nole' had its premiere in June at the Tribeca Festival and recently picked up a nomination for best short documentary at the 2026 Critics Choice Documentary Awards. In the months since its debut, it has also played at DC/DOX, Raindance London, HollyShorts and the Hamptons International Film Festival.
Nachman said the new executive producer's values align closely with the film's message. 'Common has spent years using his platform to advocate for people whose voices too often go unheard,' she said.
'What moves me most about Freddie is that he doesn't just talk about second chances, he shows up at the prison gates and makes them possible,' Nachman added. 'Having Common join our team means the world to us, and we hope together we can inspire more people to help returning citizens reintegrate into our society.'
Common is widely recognized for playing Robert Sims in Apple TV's science fiction drama 'Silo' and for taking home the 2015 Oscar for best original song for his work on 'Selma.' His recent screen roles include 'Breathe,' 'Fool's Paradise' and 'Alice.'
On the music side, he has won three Grammy Awards, and his best-known albums include 2000's 'Like Water for Chocolate' and 2004's 'Be.'
Audiences in New York will have another chance to see the short soon. 'The Second Life of Freddie Nole' is set to screen at Firehouse Cinemas at DCTV in New York City on Nov. 10, with Common scheduled to attend.
