NBC News emerged as the primary winner in television ratings during the 2026 U.S. midterm elections, securing the largest overall audience for its primetime coverage. According to Nielsen data, the network averaged 6.74 million viewers, surpassing ABC News at 5.19 million and Fox News Channel at 4.315 million. This result marked a significant departure from recent trends, where ABC and Fox typically dominated Election Night viewership.

The network’s strategy involved extending its coverage hours and introducing a dedicated streaming stream known as the Kornacki Cam. This feature allowed viewers to follow data analyst Steve Kornacki continuously, in addition to his segments with colleagues Savannah Guthrie, Tom Llamas, Kristen Welker, Hallie Jackson, and Ryan Nobles. Despite the political outcome favoring Democrats, who gained control of both the House and Senate, the audience shift did not align perfectly with the political lean of the viewers.

MS NOW, which was anticipated to attract a surge in viewers as the nation tilted left, recorded lower overall numbers than all mainstream outlets except CBS News. The decline at ABC News remains a puzzle for industry analysts, as there is no obvious explanation for the drop in its total audience. However, a special edition of World News Tonight did capture 7.4 million viewers between 6:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Eastern Time. Many ABC affiliates chose to air local programming at 7 p.m. before the network’s national election coverage commenced, which may have affected later cumulative totals.

In the key 25-to-54 demographic, which is highly valued by advertisers, CNN led among cable networks. The network attracted 1.512 million viewers in this category, compared to 771,000 for Fox News Channel and 665,000 for MS NOW. Among broadcast networks, NBC held the largest demo audience with 2.794 million, while ABC secured the second-largest share at 1.672 million.

The total audience for the 2026 midterms reached an estimated 31.2 million people across 13 linear television networks. This figure represents a significant increase from the 25.4 million viewers recorded across 12 networks in 2022. Nielsen reported that 57% of this audience watched on broadcast networks, while 43% tuned in via cable.

The 2026 election cycle saw television networks compete with a growing number of digital platforms and independent creators. Established figures such as Piers Morgan, Chuck Todd, Katie Couric, Jim Acosta, Don Lemon, Scott MacFarlane, and Katie Phang, along with former TV personalities, made significant efforts to capture audience attention through digital channels. Meanwhile, Kornacki, MS NOW’s Ali Velshi, and the Fox News podcast team also maintained a strong presence in these new media spaces.

Media executives are now analyzing the data to inform future strategies. Skydance, the company formed through the merger of Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery, holds both CNN and CBS News. CNN, led by Jake Tapper, John King, Dana Bash, and Kaitlan Collins, won the cable demo and attracted the third-largest overall audience. CBS News, while having the smallest overall crowd, saw its viewership rise compared to 2022 and outperformed Fox and MS NOW in the key demographic.

Lachlan Murdoch, CEO of Fox Corp., suggested that some Fox News audience members may be experiencing viewer fatigue during recent investor calls. Although he did not explicitly link this to the political climate, some analysts believe viewers may have been hesitant to tune in during a cycle where Democrats were rising. Fox News allocated time to opinion hosts Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham, who addressed policy challenges under President Trump while still supporting his broader vision.

Historically, major political shifts have prompted news outlets to adjust their programming to match the national tone. Following the first election of President Trump, NBC News hired Megyn Kelly from Fox News in an attempt to appeal to conservative viewers, a move that ultimately did not last. If the ratings from Tuesday night are any indication, other networks may look to experiment with similar programming changes in the near future.
