The significant Democratic performance in the 2026 midterm elections has triggered a notable shift in election night television viewership. Early data from Nielsen indicates that NBC secured a dominant lead in primetime ratings on Tuesday night. The margin of victory was substantial enough that industry analysts expect the network to maintain its top position even after final adjustments to the ratings are completed.
This outcome marks a dramatic reversal for NBC compared to the 2022 midterms, when the network finished fourth among the six most-watched news outlets. The network also claimed the most-watched live stream of the evening with its specialized "Kornacki Cam," which focused exclusively on data analyst and video board operator Steve Kornacki.
If the preliminary figures hold steady, NBC will become the first broadcast network to lead a federal election night in total viewers since the 2012 presidential election, which it also topped. While overall election coverage is already higher than in 2022, it may not reach the historically high levels recorded during the 2018 midterms.
Based on Nielsen fast national ratings that include out of home viewing, NBC averaged 6.8 million viewers during primetime. ABC followed in second place with 5.12 million viewers. The three major cable news channels were tightly clustered, with CNN recording 4.159 million viewers, MS NOW at 4.156 million, and Fox News at 4.04 million. CBS trailed these groups with 2.73 million viewers.
Because the fast national ratings do not yet include Nielsen’s big data component, the numbers are expected to shift slightly. NBC is projected to retain its primetime lead, but the cable networks are so closely bunched that their final ranking could change. This report will be updated with further comparisons to network performance from four years ago as additional data becomes available.
The combined audience across the six reported networks reached 27.05 million viewers, surpassing the final 12-network total of 25.43 million recorded for the 2022 midterms. However, the 2018 midterm election night, which drew 36.11 million viewers across 11 outlets, remains the highest for a midterm election this century and is likely out of reach for the current cycle.
NBC also held a significant advantage in the core television news advertising demographic of adults aged 25 to 54, averaging 2.93 million viewers in primetime. ABC ranked second in this demographic with 1.71 million, followed by CNN with 1.55 million. Fox News, CBS, and MS NOW were closely positioned at 800,000, 771,000, and 764,000 viewers, respectively. Fox Business, which simulcast the Fox News feed, attracted 323,000 viewers and 77,000 adults in the 25 to 54 age group.
The live stream of the Kornacki Cam generated 29 million views across all platforms, according to NBC News. This total included 6.1 million views on YouTube, where the stream peaked with approximately 300,000 concurrent viewers between 8:30 and 11:30 p.m. Eastern Time. The updated data was released on November 4 at 1 p.m., incorporating out of home ratings from Nielsen.
