Rep. Robert Garcia outlined four areas of investigation involving the Trump administration during a Wednesday news conference in Huntington Beach, California. Garcia, who is positioned to chair the House Oversight Committee, spoke after Democrats were projected to win control of the House of Representatives.

His remarks expanded on a brief statement issued Tuesday night in which he warned: “Get a lawyer.” Garcia portrayed Democratic election victories across the country as a demand for change. He said voters were frustrated with the administration and argued that the results gave Democrats a mandate to pursue oversight.

One focus would be allegations of corruption and improper financial gain involving the Trump family. Garcia is expected to seek interviews with President Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and other family members about their alleged business activities. In announcing that priority, Garcia accused the family of corruption on a scale he described as unprecedented in American politics.

A second investigation would examine the Department of Homeland Security and alleged abuses by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Garcia highlighted enforcement practices in Orange County, Long Beach and Los Angeles. He described people being knocked down, suffering broken arms and being detained while traveling to immigration appointments provided by the government. He condemned those actions as inhumane and said opposition to such treatment crossed political lines.

Garcia also said he intended to investigate corporate donors to the White House ballroom, contracts awarded without competitive bidding, including one involving the Reflecting Pool contractor, and companies he accused of exploiting the public. He contrasted financial pressures on Americans with what he described as record corporate profits. He also criticized surveillance pricing systems, saying they could result in neighbors being charged different prices when shopping for groceries.

The fourth area concerned the Epstein investigation. Garcia said he wanted public hearings to replace the interviews conducted behind closed doors while Republicans controlled the House. His remarks identified a change in how that inquiry would be conducted under Democratic oversight.

Huntington Beach is part of the district Garcia will represent in the next Congress. The district includes portions of Long Beach, Costa Mesa, Santa Ana, Seal Beach and Newport Beach. Garcia expressed pride in representing Orange County and said conversations with residents while knocking on doors had shown him a diverse community seeking reliable services and effective representation.

Garcia argued that the election results signaled a shift in Huntington Beach and the county, saying the city's identity as a MAGA stronghold had ended. He pledged to pursue priorities including coastal protection, infrastructure investment, good government and federal funding for libraries, streets and other community needs.
