A new video store in North Miami is offering movie fans a place to browse physical copies of films, from vintage tapes to newer disc releases. Hi Voltage Video carries a range of genres and formats, including rare titles, imports and movies that are out of print.
Marc Ferman describes Hi Voltage as South Florida’s only stand-alone boutique devoted exclusively to video. Its selection brings together several generations of home viewing technology, with VHS tapes, LaserDiscs, DVDs and Blu-rays alongside 4K restoration discs released by boutique labels. The store caters to people interested in both movies and the physical media used to watch them.
The shelves include horror movies, comedies and musicals, as well as some children’s films. Ferman said customers often look for movies they remember from their younger years and want to add to their collections. That interest in familiar titles sits alongside the opportunity to browse films a visitor may not already know.
For Ferman, part of the appeal is the experience of holding a movie and keeping it in a personal library. He draws a distinction between collecting a tangible copy and accessing a digital version. Browsing the store also gives visitors a chance to examine the available titles and choose something that catches their attention.
South Florida filmmaking has a dedicated place in the shop. A section called Made in Miami gathers movies shot and produced in Miami and nearby areas. Those local productions are available across VHS, LaserDisc and DVD, bringing films connected to the region together in one part of the store.
Ferman said the interest in older formats includes customers in their 20s and 30s who are beginning to collect VHS tapes. Some are choosing movies they have never watched, making their visits an opportunity to discover unfamiliar films while building collections of their own.
One visitor identified as Tin Man singled out The Deadly Spawn as an exciting find. “You just don’t see this anywhere,” Tin Man said. The reaction reflected the appeal of encountering an unusual title among the store’s selection of physical releases.
Hi Voltage Video is located at 2104 NE 123rd St., Suite 217A, in North Miami.
