Human remains were discovered inside a vehicle after firefighters extinguished a fire at Whitfield Chapel Park in Prince George’s County, Maryland, on Thursday night. County police were leading the investigation, with homicide detectives and fire investigators working together to determine what happened.
According to Maryland-National Capital Park Police, a person passing the park noticed flames shortly before 10:30 p.m. The Prince George’s County Fire Department said its firefighters put out the blaze and then found the remains inside the burned vehicle. The discovery prompted an investigation involving both police detectives and fire investigators.
Authorities had not established whether the death was a homicide or a suicide. Police had also not released the victim’s name or gender. Although homicide detectives were involved in the case, the circumstances of the death remained unclear, leaving nearby residents with questions about what had occurred at the neighborhood park.
On Friday, Upper Marlboro resident Maya Wilson was walking through the park with another woman. Wilson expressed surprise at being so close to the location of the incident. “That is crazy that that happened one hundred feet away from us right now,” she said. Both women described the uncertainty surrounding the incident as nerve-wracking.
For nearby resident Janiya Prescott, the discovery raised questions about returning to a place she has visited since childhood. “I’ve been here since I was a kid, so it’s like, do I want to come here again?” she said. Her reaction reflected unease about the incident at a familiar neighborhood gathering place.
Prescott also described the park as a place that draws people for recreation. Visitors come to play kickball and baseball, she said. Her description of those activities contrasted with the discovery inside the vehicle and the questions that police and fire investigators were working to resolve.
Other residents characterized both the surrounding community and the park as generally quiet. Jerry Blue, who lives nearby, described his experience of the area in similarly positive terms. “It’s always been pleasant out here. No problems at all,” he said.
As the investigation continued, residents’ accounts emphasized how unexpected the incident felt in a park they associated with familiar routines and recreational activities. Authorities had yet to clarify the circumstances behind the death.
