Harry Kane has won the 2026 Ballon d'Or, completing a journey that began in the youth ranks at Tottenham Hotspur and ended on the stage of the London Palladium on Monday. The ceremony took place about nine miles from his birthplace in Leytonstone.

The setting carried extra meaning. In 2017, the same venue hosted The Best FIFA Football Awards, where Cristiano Ronaldo took the men's top prize. Kane was on the 24-man shortlist that year and finished 24th. As the audience left, he stood near the exit looking at the winners on stage, having long dreamed of being counted among the game's greats.

The evening was not without drama. Less than three hours before the ceremony, the official website published profiles naming Kane, Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal as the 2026 winner, then swiftly deleted them. The event was later delayed by 45 minutes with no official reason given, and some speculated that London traffic was responsible.

Kane first collected the Gerd Müller Men's Award, given to the Striker of the Year, to cheers from the crowd. That prize is decided by goals rather than a vote, and his 73 were the most in the men's game. "Wow, wow, wow," he said on stage, thanking Tottenham by saying "I wouldn't be where I am without you."

His numbers back up the honor. Since a €120 million move from Tottenham to Bayern Munich in 2023, he has scored 158 goals in 156 matches. In the voting window, which runs from August 2025 to the end of the World Cup in July, he scored 73 goals in 65 matches. He won the Bundesliga, the DFB-Pokal and the German Supercup, and led England to third place at the World Cup, their best finish in 60 years, scoring six times at the tournament.

The path was far from obvious. Kane had loan spells at Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich City and Leicester City, and few at the time believed they were watching a future world-class player. He broke into the Spurs first team late in the 2013-14 season, was named PFA Young Player of the Year at 21, and scored on his England debut against Lithuania. He went on to score 280 goals in 435 appearances for Spurs and break Wayne Rooney's England scoring record. Barring injury, he will pass Peter Shilton's record of 125 caps next month.

Kane had never finished higher than 10th in the Ballon d'Or vote, which he managed in 2024. The award is decided by one journalist from each of FIFA's top 100 ranked nations. English players have won it only five times, and nobody has done so since Michael Owen in 2001. Real Madrid and Barcelona players have taken it 12 times each, while Manchester United lead English clubs with four.

Kane has long measured himself against the best. In a conversation captured for Amazon's "All or Nothing" series on the 2019-20 season, former Spurs manager Jose Mourinho told him that football's movie stars were still thought to belong elsewhere. Kane replied: "That's my aim. When you are at a club like Tottenham, of course we've done well, personally I've done well, but I want to be Ronaldo, Messi .."

He left England seeking trophies after a decade of personal success but collective frustration at Spurs, and has now won silverware with Bayern and the sport's top individual prize. "I am almost speechless," he said. "Being here in London has made it extra special. It made it a good omen for me tonight."
