Keanu Reeves has officially finalized a deal to return to the role of John Wick in a new animated prequel film from Lionsgate. The project marks a significant expansion of the franchise, moving the legendary hitman into the realm of animation for the first time.

The narrative of the upcoming film will focus on the early days of Wick’s career. Specifically, the story recounts his origin while he undertakes the Impossible Task. In this challenge, he must defeat all of his rivals in a single night. Success in this endeavor will free him from his binding obligations to the High Table and grant him the right to spend time with Helen, the love of his life.

Shannon Tindle, an experienced director in the animation industry, is set to helm the project. Tindle is well known for directing Netflix titles such as Ultraman: Rising and Kubo and the Two Strings. The screenplay for the animated feature has been written by Ryan and Kaz Firpo.

The production team consists of several key figures from the existing John Wick franchise. Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, who previously worked on Thunder Road, will serve as producers. They will be joined by Chad Stahelski from 87Eleven Entertainment. Keanu Reeves will also act as a producer on the film, alongside the production company Point Grey.

Adam Fogelson, the motion picture chair at Lionsgate, expressed enthusiasm for the project when it was initially announced in 2025. He noted that both animation and the John Wick universe offer endless possibilities. Fogelson stated that fans have been eagerly requesting the Impossible Task story above all else. He described Tindle’s interpretation of the plot as incredible and expressed excitement to see what the character can achieve in an animated format.

The John Wick franchise has achieved massive commercial success over the years. The series has grossed more than one billion dollars at the global box office across five feature films. This total includes the recent spinoff titled Ballerina, which was led by Ana de Armas.

Lionsgate continues to expand the franchise, which centers on the titular hitman and his ongoing conflict with the powerful organization known as the High Table. In addition to the animated prequel, a fifth live-action installment of the main series is currently in development.

The studio is also exploring other projects within the expanded universe. A standalone adventure is being developed based on the character of Caine, a blind assassin played by Donnie Yen. These concurrent projects demonstrate the studio’s commitment to maintaining the momentum of the John Wick brand across various formats.

The return of Reeves to the role is expected to generate significant interest among fans of the series. The shift to animation allows for a different visual style while retaining the core character and narrative elements that audiences have come to expect from the franchise.

As production moves forward, the collaboration between the original live-action team and new animation talents aims to blend the gritty tone of the previous films with the creative freedom offered by the animated medium. The final release date and further production details have yet to be fully disclosed.
