Thomas Markle, the estranged father of Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, was arrested in Florida on Friday. The Justice Department announced that the 82-year-old is facing charges related to the possession of child sexual abuse material. Federal officials stated that the allegations are serious and that the case will be prosecuted under federal law.

According to a criminal complaint, Markle is charged with one count of possession of child pornography. The FBI executed the search and seizure at two storage units rented by the defendant. Agents recovered approximately 78 items that are suspected to be child pornography. These items included film negatives showing an adult man with naked pre-pubescent girls. A witness reviewed the materials and positively identified the adult man in the photographs as Markle.

Markle is scheduled to make his initial appearance in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida in Tampa on Friday. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli emphasized the gravity of the situation in a statement. He noted that the prosecution team is committed to holding Markle accountable to the fullest extent of federal law. FBI Director Kash Patel also issued a statement praising the quick action taken by agents to locate the explicit material and effect the arrest.

This arrest follows a period of intense scrutiny in the Philippines. Authorities there reported investigating allegations that Markle kept child sexual abuse images at his home while residing in the country. Subsequent reports from Philippine officials indicated that they had recovered thousands of photos featuring underage males and females. Markle, a retired television lighting and photography director, previously denied these allegations. Last month, he described the claims as sick lies.

A spokesperson for Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, declined to comment on the specific details of the arrest. However, Meghan released a statement last month expressing that she was deeply distressed by the allegations against her father. She noted that their relationship has been limited and fraught in recent years. Notably, Markle did not attend their wedding in 2018 due to widespread media attention.

In her statement, Meghan revealed that she had been informed of disturbing allegations against him in the past. British police confirmed that she was passed a letter in January 2019 containing claims about alleged offending outside the United Kingdom. The London Metropolitan Police stated that they had not informed other law enforcement agencies about the contents of that letter at the time. The force has since referred the matter to Britain's policing watchdog to review how the allegations were handled.

Meghan stated that the scope of what has been uncovered is more sickening than she could have imagined. She explained that her decision to keep her children, Prince Archie, who is seven, and Princess Lilibet, who is five, away from her father was made to protect them. The couple stepped back from their duties as working royals in 2020 amid reports of a rift with the senior royal family. They subsequently left Britain for California.

Prince Harry, the second son of King Charles and the late Princess Diana, has leveled harsh criticism at Buckingham Palace and other senior royals in recent media interviews and his memoir, Spare. The couple recently returned to Britain two months ago. Their two children have since moved to schools in the country, marking a significant shift in their family life following years spent in the United States.
