Motorola is attempting a significant shift in its modern smartphone strategy by launching an all-out flagship slab-style device. The new Signature 27 is designed to compete directly with the highest tier of premium phones, such as the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra. While the company has previously found success with its Razr clamshell foldables by leveraging brand nostalgia and distinctive design, the Signature line represents a bold move toward a luxury aesthetic. This specific model has not been available in the US market until now, marking a new chapter for the brand in the American premium segment.
The device carries a starting price of $1,599, a figure that reflects the current high-cost environment for mobile hardware. At this price point, buyers receive 512GB of storage and 12GB of RAM. This configuration mirrors the $1,599, 512GB variant of the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra. Samsung does offer a more affordable 256GB configuration for $1,399, but Motorola’s entry-level price includes the larger storage capacity, aiming to justify the cost through immediate hardware value.
Motorola first previewed the Signature 27 earlier this year, revealing that it would be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chipset. The full announcement today confirms additional premium features, including audio designed by Bang & Olufsen. The camera system is particularly robust, featuring both 50-megapixel and 200-megapixel telephoto lenses. The phone will also be available in two specific Pantone color options, further emphasizing its positioning as a fashion-forward luxury item.
Powering the device is a 7,000mAh silicon-carbon battery paired with a 6.8-inch tandem OLED screen. The display utilizes two light-emitting panels to achieve a peak brightness of 12,000 nits. This dual-layer design aims to improve battery efficiency, allowing the phone to reach maximum brightness without excessive power draw or overheating. The device also boasts IP68 and IP69 ratings, ensuring full protection against dust and water.
The camera array includes a 50-megapixel Sony Lytia L910 sensor equipped with LOFIC technology for enhanced dynamic range. In addition to a 3x 200-megapixel camera and a 50-megapixel ultrawide lens, the phone features an Event Vision Sensor. Motorola states that this sensor identifies movement on a pixel level to help capture fast-moving subjects with greater clarity and precision. The audio system includes a redesigned speaker architecture intended to provide a physical sensation of sound, according to the company's press release.
Charging capabilities include up to 90W wired charging and up to 50W wireless charging. However, users must utilize Motorola’s proprietary wireless charger to achieve the maximum wireless speed. In a notable first for the company and for a mainstream US phone, the Signature 27 will support the privacy-focused GrapheneOS. One potential drawback for some users is the lack of built-in Qi2 magnets, a feature increasingly common in other premium flagships.
Motorola is also promising seven years of OS upgrades for the Signature 27. This support policy aligns the device with the long-term update commitments made by competitors like Samsung and Google. While the feature set is difficult to criticize, the timing of the launch coincides with rising memory costs, a phenomenon some observers have dubbed RAMageddon Year Two. This economic backdrop makes the $1,600 price tag a steep ask for consumers.
Alongside the phone, Motorola announced updates to its broader ecosystem. The new Moto Watch Fit 27 claims up to 12 days of battery life, while the Moto Buds 27 feature Bose active noise cancellation and IP57 ratings for both the buds and the case. In Europe and the UK, these accessories will arrive in the coming weeks. The watch will start at 99.99 pounds, approximately 134 US dollars, and the buds will cost 179.99 pounds, or about 242 US dollars. US pricing and exact release dates for these accessories have not yet been specified.
For US consumers, pre-sales for the Signature 27 begin on November 19, 2026. The phone is scheduled to go on sale in stores on November 26, 2026. As Motorola enters this competitive space, the Signature 27 will need to offer more than just an impressive specification sheet to convince buyers to make the leap to its premium price point.
