Luka Doncic delivered a dominant offensive performance on Friday, scoring 53 points to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to a 124-118 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers in NBA Cup group-stage action. The win marked the Lakers' fourth consecutive victory, capping a game where they overcame a significant deficit.
The Lakers started slowly, falling behind by as many as 16 points during the second quarter. However, Doncic shifted the momentum with a remarkable shot from well beyond the half-court line at the end of the first half. That play pulled Los Angeles within seven points and set the stage for a strong second-half surge.
Portland attempted a comeback in the final minute, getting within four points of tying the game. Nonetheless, Doncic secured the win with a floater, extending his hot streak. He has now scored at least 40 points in six of his last seven games. This achievement places him in elite company, as he joins Elgin Baylor, Kobe Bryant, and George Mikan as the only Lakers players to record 40-plus point games in four straight regular-season contests.
Doncic also added five rebounds and five assists to his stat line. Reflecting on his performance, the Slovenian star noted that he is having a lot of fun. He emphasized that playing basketball is inherently enjoyable for him, but the experience is even better when he plays well and his team wins. This 50-point outing was the eleventh of his career and his fourth with the Lakers, a franchise record that ties him with George Mikan.
In another notable game, LeBron James made his first trip to Cleveland as a member of the Philadelphia 76ers. The four-time champion, now 41 and in his 24th NBA season, was greeted with a mix of warm cheers and scattered boos upon his introduction. Despite the emotional homecoming, the Cavaliers ended the night with a 119-95 victory, snapping Philadelphia's five-game winning streak.
James had a difficult night on the offensive end, finishing with eight points on three-of-12 shooting. He also recorded seven rebounds, three assists, two steals, and six turnovers. Star center Joel Embiid struggled as well, missing all nine of his field goal attempts and scoring only six points from the free-throw line. Jaylen Brown led the Sixers with 20 points, but Cleveland controlled the pace of the game from the start.
The Cavaliers' success was driven by strong team play and rebounding. They out-rebounded Philadelphia 56-42, even without injured center Jarrett Allen. Donovan Mitchell contributed 23 points, including 10 in the first quarter, while Evan Mobley added 22. After the game, James admitted that he did not feel in good rhythm offensively and cited too many personal turnovers as a key factor in the loss.
The NBA Cup group stage will continue throughout November. The tournament schedule calls for quarterfinals on December 4 and 5, followed by semifinals on December 8 and 9. The championship final is set to take place on December 11.
Other results from the night included a blowout by the Boston Celtics. Boston defeated the Charlotte Hornets 119-80, draining 24 three-pointers on 44 attempts. Jayson Tatum led the Celtics with 34 points, including five three-pointers, as the team led by as many as 46 points for the majority of the contest.
In the West, Victor Wembanyama led the San Antonio Spurs to a 124-109 win over the Sacramento Kings. The Spurs star scored 30 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, following a previous game where he recorded 52 points and 24 rebounds. Meanwhile, the Oklahoma City Thunder extended their dominance over the Memphis Grizzlies with a 128-97 victory. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 28 points, and Ajay Mitchell set a career high with 35 points, helping Oklahoma City secure their 13th straight win against Memphis despite missing several key starters.
