The Pittsburgh Steelers enter their upcoming bye week with a 6 2 record, holding sole possession of first place in the AFC North. While the win loss record is impressive, the team’s method of achieving this standing has been even more notable. The defense currently ranks third in the league for points allowed, having not surrendered a touchdown in seven consecutive quarters. Additionally, the offensive line is finding its rhythm, and running back Jaylen Warren is experiencing a breakout season. His backup, Rico Dowdle, is also making significant contributions, while quarterback Aaron Rodgers continues to display his renowned passing ability.
Although the Steelers possess many of the necessary components to end their nine year drought without a playoff victory, experts suggest they should look to acquire a receiver before the trade deadline on November 10. This move could give the team a genuine shot at reaching the Super Bowl. The offense has received considerable help from rookie Germie Bernard, as well as tight ends Darnell Washington and Pat Freiermuth. These players, along with Warren and Dowdle, have helped mask the team’s lack of depth at the wide receiver position. However, this issue is likely to become apparent in the postseason.
Injuries to Roman Wilson and Michael Pittman, combined with struggles from DK Metcalf, have placed the Steelers in the market for additional receiving talent. One potential option involves acquiring Ladd McConkey from the Los Angeles Chargers. In this scenario, the Steelers would send Wilson and a 2027 second round pick to the Chargers in exchange for McConkey and a 2027 fifth round pick. The Chargers might prefer a replacement for McConkey who has experience working with Jim Harbaugh, which Wilson has. Although McConkey is on a rookie contract and is a former 1,000 yard receiver, the added draft capital could make the deal appealing. For Pittsburgh, the fifth round pick helps offset the loss of the second rounder, which they may need for a long term quarterback search in 2027.
Another possibility involves trading for Brian Thomas Jr. from the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Steelers could send a 2027 second round and sixth round pick to receive Thomas and a 2027 fifth round pick. Thomas, a former Pro Bowler, has spent much of the current season on the bench. A fresh start in Pittsburgh could benefit him, and his size and talent would provide a red zone threat for Rodgers. The main concern for the Jaguars is that they will face the Steelers in Week 14 and potentially in the playoffs, but the right compensation could overcome this hesitation.
The Cleveland Browns are also a source for Jerry Jeudy. The Steelers could acquire Jeudy by sending a 2027 fourth round pick. While the Browns may prefer to trade him to a non divisional team, they have precedent for in season trades with rivals, such as the deal involving Joe Flacco last year. Jeudy is just two years removed from a campaign where he caught 90 passes for 1,229 yards, and a change of scenery could reignite his production.
Finally, the Indianapolis Colts offer Josh Downs as a trade target. The Steelers could send a 2027 third round pick to bring Downs to Pittsburgh. This would strengthen the receiving corps without requiring the team to part with any current players. Downs is a proven slot receiver with 228 career receptions. However, the Steelers might face a bidding war, and the Colts may temper their expectations because Downs is set to enter free agency after the season, making him a potential rental player.
