Nicolas Cage has provided a personal update regarding his living arrangements following the significant structural damage to his Malibu residence. The incident, which occurred in September, has forced the actor to reside in hotels while the aftermath of the event is managed.
The trouble began on September 8 when a large sinkhole opened near the actor's property. The collapse measured approximately 30 by 60 feet and reached a depth of about 25 feet. The ground shift swallowed a portion of the driveway and caused damage to the deck of the $10.5 million beachfront mansion. The Spider-Noir star was among those affected by the sudden geological change.
The severity of the collapse led to the evacuation of 31 properties in the immediate vicinity. Emergency responders and residents faced restricted access to the area due to the instability of the ground. Malibu officials declared a local emergency, citing concerns about a potential gas leak in the zone. They also warned that conditions could deteriorate further due to high tides and rain associated with Hurricane Marie. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident.
Cage addressed his current status while appearing on a panel at Los Angeles Comic Con on Saturday. When asked about his plans for the Halloween holiday, he candidly described his situation. 'I'm currently a little bit homeless,' he told the audience. 'Something happened to my house in Malibu, so I'm just sort of living in hotels, so I don't have normal trick-or-treaters I would like to enjoy tonight.'
Despite the lack of a traditional home base for the holiday, the actor remained optimistic about celebrating with his family. He confirmed that he would still be participating in Halloween activities with his four-year-old daughter, August Francesca Coppola Cage. The plans involved a trip to Santa Monica for trick-or-treating, ensuring the child could experience the holiday spirit despite the disruption at home.
Cage also shared his evening entertainment plans, revealing a specific cinematic choice for after his daughter was put to bed. He intended to watch the classic horror film The Shining. The actor expressed appreciation for the director of that film, noting the director was once nominated for worst director at the Razzie Awards. 'He directed the hell out of that movie,' Cage said. 'I'm going to watch that tonight. After I put my daughter to bed, I'm going to put on The Shining.'
The incident highlights the ongoing risks posed by geological instability in certain parts of the coast. While the immediate emergency has been managed, the recovery process for the damaged property continues. Cage's public comments offer a glimpse into how celebrities navigate unexpected domestic crises while maintaining their professional schedules.
The actor's appearance at the comic convention served as a light-hearted moment for fans, who enjoyed his self-deprecating humor about his temporary housing situation. The combination of his recent film roles and personal life updates keeps him in the public eye, even during periods of personal transition.
As the weather patterns associated with Hurricane Marie continue to influence the region, local authorities remain vigilant. The declaration of a local emergency underscores the importance of monitoring conditions in areas prone to such geological events. Residents in the affected area have since been able to return to their homes, though the area remains under observation.
For now, Cage is making the best of his hotel stay, focusing on family time and his love of cinema. His comments suggest a practical approach to the situation, prioritizing his daughter's enjoyment of the holiday while he handles the logistics of his damaged home from a distance.
