Sony has reported a sharp rise in quarterly profit, with its PlayStation business and the box office success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day driving much of the gain. In its latest earnings report, the company said net profit reached 449.60 billion yen, about $2.84 billion, for the three months ended in September.
That figure marks a 44 percent increase over the 311.4 billion yen, roughly $1.96 billion, that Sony posted for the same period last year.
A major contributor was Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which opened in July and went on to earn $2.52 billion at the global box office. That total makes it the third-highest grossing movie in history.
The film's performance gave a significant lift to Sony Pictures Entertainment, which reported earnings of $581 million for the three months ended in September. That represents a 527 percent jump from the $93 million the division recorded in the same quarter of 2025.
The picture was less strong for PlayStation hardware. Sales of PlayStation 5 consoles declined, with Sony reporting 2.6 million units sold in the second quarter, down from 4 million units in the same quarter of 2025.
Game software told a better story. The Sony exclusive title Marvel's Wolverine sold 2.4 million units against a reported budget of $300 million, and PlayStation game sales overall rose for both digital downloads and physical discs. The increase came despite a week-long player blackout held in August to protest Sony's plan to abandon discs entirely.
Looking ahead, Sony indicated that work on the next generation PlayStation console is moving forward. Developers are making "solid progress" on the new hardware, according to Sony chief financial officer Lin Tao, and the project is "progressing as scheduled."
