Tyler "TJ" Wright has been selected to lead the Titusville Police Department, city officials announced Thursday, Oct. 29. The appointment places the department under the leadership of a 19-year veteran who has already been serving as acting chief. He is expected to formally take over as chief on Nov. 2, 2026.
Wright assumed the acting position after former Police Chief John Lau was fired in June following his involvement in a rollover crash. The appointment makes Wright the permanent selection for the job he has held on an acting basis since Lau's departure, according to information released by the city.
During his career in Titusville, Wright advanced from police officer to deputy chief before becoming acting chief. His responsibilities as chief will include oversight of public safety operations and community engagement, along with supervision of the department's deputies, officers and staff, the city said in announcing his selection.
Wright's training includes graduation from the Brevard Community College Law Enforcement Academy in 2007. He later received a bachelor's degree in criminal justice administration from Columbia Southern University in 2011. He also completed the FBI National Academy in 2024 and earned a master's degree in public safety from the University of Virginia in 2025.
City Manager Tom Abbate pointed to Wright's lengthy service and familiarity with Titusville in explaining his confidence in the appointment. Abbate said Wright knows the city's neighborhoods, schools and residents, and recognizes the role that relationships play in effective policing.
"Public safety is the foundation of everything we do as a city," Abbate said in a statement. He expressed confidence that Wright would strengthen the department's existing work and help keep Titusville safe for residents, workers and families.
In his own statement, Wright said he was honored to be chosen. He described leadership as a responsibility measured through service, relationships and lasting impact, rather than through rank or a position's title.
Wright also outlined a commitment to investing in department personnel and developing future leaders. He said his approach would include innovation, accountability and transparency while preparing the department to meet changing public safety needs. The appointment details, educational background and statements were provided in a City of Titusville press release.
